Wyoming PMHNP requirements
Total
Wyoming sets no APRN hour total that applies to every board-certified PMHNP. The topic minimums below still apply. Your ANCC certification renewal sets its own hours, listed with your other credentials. The renewal cycle is biennial, and CE is due by December 31 of even years.
Topic minimums
- Responsible prescribing of controlled substances or treatment of substance use disorders
- 3
- You need 3 hours each cycle.
Cycle and record rules
- Renewal
- The renewal cycle is biennial, and CE is due by December 31 of even years.
- Renewal fee
- The board renewal fee is $180 every 2 years.
- Approved providers
- The Board keeps no approved-provider list. "Continuing education" is "learning experiences obtained after initial licensure or certification and designed to augment the knowledge and skills of nurses" (Ch. 2, Sec. 2(e)), and the Board asks for certificates showing the licensee's name, the course and the hours ("We highly encourage you to simply search on the internet", Board licensing page). The three APRN hours must be "related to the responsible prescribing of controlled substances or treatment of substance abuse disorders" (Sec. 14(c)(i)(C)) with a title specific to that subject (Board resource sheet), and must fall in the January 1 odd-year to December 31 even-year renewal cycle (Sec. 2(x)). Copies are uploaded to the Nurse Portal with the renewal.
- Board audit
- The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.
Every credential a Wyoming PMHNP renews
Each one renews on its own date, and a lapse at any of them stops prescribing. The ANCC certification and DEA registration are the same in every state.

Full board policy details
- RN competency is a menu with no mandatory hours. "An RN or LPN/VN shall demonstrate continuing competency by completing one of the following in the past two (2) years: (A) Four hundred (400) hours of active nursing practice; or (B) Successfully pass the NCLEX; or (C) Complete a refresher course or the equivalent, accepted by the Board; or (D) Complete a nursing education program that confers a degree beyond the applicant's basic nursing education; or (E) Submit evidence of forty (40) hours of continuing education" (Ch. 2, Sec. 14(d)(i), effective 12/17/2025). "Active nursing practice" is "engagement in paid, unpaid, or volunteer activity in which the nurse applies knowledge or clinical judgment in a way that influences patients, nurses, organizations or systems" (Sec. 2(a)); caring for family members does not count (Board advisory opinion "Verification of Active Nursing Practice"). The engine carries no RN total because 40 hours is one optional item; a working nurse meets the menu with practice hours. Older guides quote "20 contact hours", "30 hours" or "200 hours plus 15 hours"; the last two were the 2020 rule (former Sec. 13(d)), replaced 12/17/2025.
- An APRN's RN row owes nothing of its own: "An APRN who holds an active Wyoming RN license shall only be required to meet the continuing competency requirements of the APRN in Section 14(c)" (Ch. 2, Sec. 14(a)). The RN license is still renewed on its own application and fee ("If I have an APRN and an RN license can I renew them both through the nurse portal? Yes, however it requires a separate application for each license", Board renewal page), and a Wyoming APRN may instead hold the RN license as a multistate license from another Nurse Licensure Compact state.
- APRN competency is national certification: "An APRN shall demonstrate continuing competency by submitting evidence of: (A) Current national certification as an APRN in the recognized role and population focus area; or (B) If recognized as an APRN in the State prior to January 1, 1999, and has maintained continuous licensure, but is not nationally certified, the APRN shall submit evidence of: (I) Forty (40) hours of continuing education related to the APRN's recognized role and population focus area; and (II) Four hundred (400) hours of active nursing practice as an APRN during the last two (2) years" (Ch. 2, Sec. 14(c)(i)). A PMHNP-BC meets (A) through the national row (us-pmhnp bc.yaml, ANCC's own 75 hours); the certification is not a substitute for the three controlled-substance hours, which Sec. 14(c)(i)(C) adds to either path. The pre-1999 non-certified path (B) is not modeled: it applies only to APRNs recognized before 1999 who never certified, and gating 40 hours on the absence of a `pmhnp bc` row would ask them of every APRN who has not yet entered that row. Such an APRN should log 40 role-related hours and attest to the 400 practice hours. Each additional national certification renews for $70 (Ch. 5, Sec. 4(g)(ii)(A)).
- Prescriptive authority is a separate Board authorization on the APRN license ("the authority granted by the Board to the APRN to select, prescribe, administer, dispense, or provide prescriptive and non-prescriptive medications", Ch. 1, Sec. 2(s); Ch. 3, Sec. 3(b)), initially $70 and renewed for $70 with the APRN license (Ch. 5, Sec. 4(g)), and the Board renewal page asks "Do I need to renew my Prescriptive Authority? Yes, you are required to complete three (3) hours". The Board transmits the list of APRNs with prescriptive authority to the Board of Pharmacy (Ch. 3, Sec. 3(b)(iv)), which then issues the state controlled-substance registration (wy-csr.yaml) that a prescriber needs before applying for a DEA registration. The three hours are modeled on every APRN row (notes, decision (2)); an APRN who does not prescribe and reads the statute's "licensees who have prescriptive authority" narrowly sees three hours the Board may not ask for.
- No other mandated topics. Wyoming law sets no implicit bias, suicide prevention, human trafficking, pain management or one-time opioid course for nurses beyond the three hours above. The prescription tracking program (PDMP) duty is to search it: "the practitioner or his delegate shall search the prescription tracking program for prior prescriptions issued to the patient before first issuing the prescription ... and repeat the search every three (3) months for opioids" (W.S. 35-7-1060(b)), and the Board of Pharmacy enrolls each registered practitioner in it (35-7-1025(c)); neither is education. Controlled substances "are required to be electronically prescribed" (W.S. 35-7-1030). The federal MATE Act training belongs to the DEA row (us-dea.yaml).
- Compacts: Wyoming is a Nurse Licensure Compact state (W.S. 33-21-201 and -202), so a Wyoming-resident RN may hold a multistate RN license renewed on this calendar ("If Wyoming is not your primary state of residency and you have a multistate license through your primary state of residence - NO, you do not have to renew your Wyoming license", Board renewal page). Wyoming has enacted the APRN Compact (W.S. 33-21-301 and -302), but the Compact "will be implemented when 7 states have enacted the legislation" (Board APRN Compact page) and is in effect nowhere, so the APRN license is single-state.
- First renewal: Chapter 2 has no waiver or proration; a license issued at any point in the cycle expires December 31 of the even year and the licensee renews with the same competency evidence. For an RN licensed by examination in the cycle, passing the NCLEX is itself menu item (B) of Sec. 14(d)(i). An APRN first licensed in the cycle still documents the three hours, so no first-cycle override is modeled.
