Michigan PMHNP Continuing Education Requirements
Here's what a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) must complete to renew in Michigan.
These are the Michigan APRN license requirements for a board-certified PMHNP who prescribes controlled substances. Your RN license, ANCC certification and DEA registration renew separately; see every credential.
The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.

Cycle and record rules
- Renewal
- The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.
- Renewal fee
- The board renewal fee is $131 every 2 years, and a late (delinquent) renewal adds a $20 fee.
- Approved providers
- A continuing education program or activity "related to the practice of nursing or any non-clinical subject relevant to the practice of nursing" is approved "regardless of the format in which it is offered" when it is offered or approved for credit by AANA, AANP, ACCME, ACNM, the AMA, ANCC, the AOA, the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, NAPNES, the NLN, another state or provincial board of nursing, or a board-approved Michigan nursing education program (R 338.10602(2)(a)). Credit is the sponsor's approved hours, or 1 hour per 60 minutes when none is set. Hours must be earned in the 2 years before the license expires; "No more than 12 credit hours may be earned during a 24-hour period", and an applicant "may not earn credit for a continuing education program or activity that is identical to a program or activity the applicant has already earned credit for during that renewal period" (R 338.10602(1)). The Board keeps no provider list of its own; LARA offers CE Broker for tracking but does not require it.
- Recordkeeping
- Keep CE documentation for 4 years after each renewal.
- Board audit
- The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
- Late renewal
- The board allows a 60-day grace period after expiration. A late renewal adds a $20 late fee.
To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.

Michigan PMHNP required trainings and mandates
Michigan also requires specific trainings. Some are due once around initial licensure, and others run on their own recurring schedule.
One-time requirements
- "Under section 16148 of the code, MCL 333.16148, the individual who is licensed or seeking licensure shall have completed training in identifying victims of human trafficking" covering the types and venues of trafficking, identifying victims and warning signs in healthcare settings for adults and minors, and reporting resources, from a recognized health-related organization, a state or federal agency, a board-approved or college program, or by reading a qualifying peer-reviewed article (R 338.10105(1)). LARA: "completion of a one-time training to identify victims of human trafficking is required for individuals seeking licensure", and a renewing nurse "must certify on their renewal application that prior to renewing their license they have completed a one-time training". The rule sets no hour count, so the one hour is a placeholder for "completed". It does not count toward the 25: "an applicant may not earn continuing education credit for the human trafficking requirement" (R 338.10602(1)(b)). A nurse first licensed on or after the 2017 rules completed it before issuance and records it through the proofs question. (1 hour, one time).
Full board policy details
- Activity caps of R 338.10602(2): the caps the engine applies are presentations (6 hours), publications (10 hours), preceptorship (5 hours), orientation or residency (5 hours), independent reading or media without a self-assessment component (4 hours, "1 hour ... for each 50 to 60 minutes of participation") and healthcare organization committee service on quality patient care or utilization review (4 hours, 1 hour per 60 minutes). "Successful completion of a national nursing specialty examination" earns "Ten hours of continuing education ... in the year in which the applicant achieves a passing score", at most 20 hours per renewal period and never for repeating the same examination (R 338.10602(2)(d)); the engine has no examination activity, so a licensee who passes one logs the 10 hours by hand. The 12-hours-per-24-hour-period ceiling (R 338.10602(1)(a)) is not modeled.
- Nurse practitioner specialty certification: granted to a registered professional nurse who "Holds a current and valid license to practice nursing in this state" and "Possesses advanced practice certification" from ANCC, the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board, the National Certification Corporation, AANP, the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation or the AACN Certification Corporation (R 338.10404b; MCL 333.17210(1)(c)). "Specialty certification renewal must correspond with the same schedule as the license renewal", and a renewing nurse practitioner "shall have obtained recertification or maintained certification within the 2-year period immediately before the application" from one of those bodies (R 338.10405b(1)-(2)), keeping the evidence for 4 years (R 338.10405b(3)). LARA's renewal form pre-checks the specialty: leaving it checked "attests that you currently hold national certification from an approved specialty organization", unchecking it drops the specialty and charges only the RN fee, and "The suspension or revocation of a license as a registered nurse shall automatically void the specialty certification" (R 338.10402). The Board adds no CE to the certification; the certification's own CE is ANCC's (us-pmhnp bc.yaml).
- National certification as a substitute: R 338.10602(2)(c) lists "Obtaining specialty certification or maintaining certification as 1 of the following: ... Nurse practitioner" among acceptable continuing education, with "proof of certification or recertification" as the audit document and "Twenty-five hours of continuing education, including 2 hours for pain and symptom management" as the credit. A PMHNP-BC in good standing therefore has the 25 hours and the pain hours covered and owes the Board only the 2 implicit bias hours (R 338.7004 is a separate rule the credit does not reach) and the one-time trainings. Modeled by switching the total and the pain floor off for a `pmhnp bc` holder, the tx-aprn-rn.yaml pattern; a nurse practitioner certified by AANP or another listed body who is not in this product's stack sees the full 25.
- Prescribing (MCL 333.17211a, effective April 9, 2017): an APRN "may prescribe any of the following: (a) A nonscheduled prescription drug. (b) Subject to subsection (2), a controlled substance included in schedules 2 to 5 of part 72, as a delegated act of a physician", with "both the advanced practice registered nurse's and the physician's DEA registration numbers" on the prescription. LARA: APRNs are "Permitted to write a prescription for a controlled substance, schedules 2-5 under the delegation of a physician", "there must be a written delegation agreement between the APRN and the doctor when dealing with controlled substances", and "APRNs do not get their own CS license - they need only obtain a DEA registration number." The Michigan controlled substance license of MCL 333.7303 and R 338.3132 (renewed "for an equal number of years" with the article 15 license, R 338.3132(4)) is held by the delegating physician, not the APRN, so there is no `csr` row in this state. R 338.10601(3), which has a renewing nurse "who also applies for a controlled substance license" complete the R 338.3135 training, reaches nurse anesthetists prescribing under MCL 333.17210(3), not nurse practitioners.
- Opioids and controlled substances awareness training: owed by a delegated controlled-substance prescriber under R 338.3135(2) and (5) and certified on each renewal. Gated on a DEA row because an APRN without one is not a controlled-substance delegatee. The rule's phrasing, "taken 1 time during the current license cycle", is read as a one-time course (the nursing rule and LARA call it "1-time" training); a reviewer who reads it as once per cycle should change the kind to category with scope cycle. Proof is kept "for 3 renewal periods plus 1 additional year" (R 338.3135(3)). LARA accepts the DEA MATE Act training as satisfying the state requirement.
- First renewal: the 25 hours bind "an applicant for license renewal who has been licensed for the 2-year period immediately before the expiration date of the license" (R 338.10601(1)). Since the May 8, 2024 rules every initial nursing license runs a full two years from its issue date, so LARA states: "If your initial Michigan RN or LPN license was issued on or after May 8, 2024, you are required to complete CEs for your first renewal." Initial licenses issued before that date on a shorter first term were exempt at their first renewal, all of which fell before May 2026, so no first-cycle override is carried. The initial 2 implicit bias hours (R 338.7004(1)) do not carry into the first renewal's 2 hours (R 338.7004(2)-(3)).
- Waiver (R 338.10601(5); MCL 333.16205): "A request for a waiver under section 16205 of the code ... must be received by the department at least 30 days before the last regularly scheduled board meeting before the license expires." Board-granted case by case; not modeled.
- Compacts: Michigan is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state. HB 4246 (2025), which would enact the NLC, passed the House 57-52 on June 11, 2025 and was referred to the Senate Regulatory Affairs Committee, where it sat when this rule was authored; the NLC's 43 jurisdictions do not include Michigan. Michigan has not enacted the APRN Compact, which has not taken effect anywhere. Every Michigan RN holds a single-state license governed by this rule.
Michigan PMHNP CE: frequently asked questions
Which credentials does a Michigan PMHNP renew?
4 separate credentials, each on its own renewal date: the APRN (Michigan, biennial), the RN (Michigan, biennial), the PMHNP-BC (ANCC, every 5 years), and the DEA (DEA, triennial). Michigan issues no separate CSR. A lapse at any one of them stops prescribing.
How often do Michigan PMHNP licensees renew?
The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.
How much does Michigan PMHNP license renewal cost?
The board's renewal fee is $131 every 2 years, per the Michigan board fee schedule. Renewing late adds a $20 delinquency fee on top. CE course costs are separate and set by course providers.
Are there subject-specific CE requirements for Michigan PMHNP licensees?
Yes. Michigan requires 2 hours of implicit bias.
