Nevada PMHNP Continuing Education Requirements

Nevada psychiatric nurse practitioners must complete 30 continuing education hours every 2 years to renew their APRN license, including 4 hours of cultural competency and 2 hours of substance use disorders.

These are the Nevada APRN license requirements for a board-certified PMHNP who prescribes controlled substances. Your RN license, ANCC certification and DEA registration renew separately; see every credential.

Cycle and record rules

Renewal
The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.
Renewal fee
The board renewal fee is $100 every 2 years.
New licensees
A nurse renewing for the first biennial period after graduating from nursing school is exempt from the 30 hours (NRS 632.343(1)) but must still complete the four cultural competency hours and the one-time four-hour bioterrorism course (NRS 632.343(3)). The engine applies the waiver at the RN license's first renewal; a licensee who graduated more than two years before that renewal should treat the 30 hours as owed.
Approved providers
Hours must come from "a program of continuing education approved by the Board" (NRS 632.343(1)). A course "shall be deemed to be approved by the Board" if it meets NRS 632.343 and is offered by "A provider approved by the Board; A national nursing organization; An academic institution; A provider of continuing education that is recognized by another board of nursing; or A provider of continuing education that is recognized by the regulatory body of a related discipline ... that approves courses of continuing education" (NAC 632.355(1)). The Board's list adds providers "recognized by" the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the ANCC Commission on Accreditation, NAPNAP and the National League for Nursing, and warns that "MEDCEU is not an approved CE Provider." The deemed-approved list is broad enough that the provider gate is left open and the course list is carried in prose. One contact hour is 60 minutes; "One semester credit = 15 contact hours; one quarter credit = 10 contact hours" for degree coursework (Board CE page). Hours count only in the 24 months before the renewal birthday (NAC 632.340(3), 632.291(4)(a)); nothing carries over.
Recordkeeping
Keep CE documentation for 4 years after each renewal.
Board audit
The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
Late renewal
A late renewal adds a late fee.

To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.

Nevada PMHNP required trainings and mandates

Beyond the 30-hour CE total, Nevada requires specific trainings. Some are due once around initial licensure, and others run on their own recurring schedule.

One-time requirements

  • The program of continuing education must include, "For each person licensed pursuant to this chapter, a course of instruction, to be completed within 2 years after initial licensure, relating to the medical consequences of an act of terrorism that involves the use of a weapon of mass destruction. The course must provide at least 4 hours of instruction that includes instruction in the following subjects: (1) An overview of acts of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction; (2) Personal protective equipment required for acts of terrorism; (3) Common symptoms and methods of treatment associated with exposure to, or injuries caused by, chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear agents; (4) Syndromic surveillance and reporting procedures for acts of terrorism that involve biological agents; and (5) An overview of the information available on, and the use of, the Health Alert Network" (NRS 632.343(3)(b)). "A nurse, while licensed pursuant to chapter 632 of NRS, shall retain documentation of completion of a course of instruction relating to the medical consequences of an act of terrorism that involves the use of a weapon of mass destruction required by subsection 3 of NRS 632.343" (NAC 632.340(5)). Board: "4 hours one-time" for LPN, RN, APRN and CRNA; keep the certificate "indefinitely". (4 hours, one time).
Full board policy details
  • National certification at APRN renewal: an APRN who completed the APRN preparation program on or after July 1, 2014 must submit "proof that the advanced practice registered nurse has maintained certification as an advanced practice registered nurse" from the American Board of Nursing Specialties, the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or another Board-approved national agency (NAC 632.291(1)(b); NAC 632.260(1)(f)(2); NRS 632.237(1)(b)(2), (7)). ANCC's PMHNP-BC is ABSNC-accredited, so the `pmhnp bc` row is the proof, but Nevada gives no continuing-education credit for holding it: the 30 and 45 hours are owed in full and are not gated on the certification.
  • HIV stigma training (SB 439, 2023, effective January 1, 2024): "For each person licensed pursuant to this chapter who provides or supervises the provision of emergency medical services in a hospital or primary care, at least 2 hours of training in the stigma, discrimination and unrecognized bias toward persons who have acquired or are at a high risk of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus to be completed within 2 years after beginning to provide or supervise the provision of such services or care" (NRS 632.343(3), as quoted by the Board's Fall 2023 newsletter). Board: "The NSBN does not currently ask where nurses work, so we will leave it up to each of you to determine if you are mandated to take this training ... If you are audited, you will need to show proof of completion of the course." The duty attaches to an employment setting rather than to the license and is one-time, so it is not modeled for this population; a PMHNP in hospital emergency or primary care should log the course tagged HIV/AIDS.
  • Preceptorship credit: "Documentation from a school or agency attesting to 120 hours of preceptorship per renewal period = 10 continuing education units", "10 CEUs maximum per renewal period", where the preceptee is "an RN/LPN in a facility's organized orientation or a nursing student in a preceptorship course" (Board CE page). Not modeled as a format cap because the Board publishes it as guidance rather than regulation; log it as a 10-hour credit at most.
  • Accrual window: the Board proves the hours "during the 24 months which immediately precede the nurse's most recent birthday" (NAC 632.340(3)) and the CE page says "The renewal period goes back two years from when the renewal is submitted." Both describe the licensing period that ends on the renewal birthday, which is the cycle window here; a renewal filed early (up to 60 days before expiration) still counts hours earned after filing against the same period on audit.
  • Geriatrics (NRS 632.343(4)): "The Board shall encourage each licensee who treats or cares for persons who are more than 60 years of age to receive, as a portion of their continuing education, education in geriatrics and gerontology." Encouraged, not required, so not modeled; the Board's table also lists rare-disease and pediatric-cancer symptom courses as "Optional".
  • Lapsed practice and reinstatement: "An applicant for renewal of a license who has not practiced nursing during the immediately preceding 5-year period must complete a course or program approved by the Board" (NAC 632.192(4)); the Board's FAQ reads this as a refresher program or retaking the NCLEX. "When a licensee holds an inactive or delinquent license and wishes to reinstate it, the licensee must submit evidence to the Board of his or her participation in 30 contact hours of continuing education during the 2 years immediately preceding the period for which the license is requested" (NAC 632.400), which equals the standard requirement, so no conditional block is needed. An APRN returning after inactivity or infrequent practice applies under NAC 632.293.
  • APRN portfolio: on audit an APRN also produces the portfolio of NAC 632.2563 and proof of licensure under NAC 632.2597 (NAC 632.291(4)(b), (c)). Prescribing authority is part of the APRN license itself (NAC 632.257 to 632.259; advanced pharmacotherapeutics is an entry requirement, not a renewal one), so Nevada sets no recurring pharmacology hours for prescribers. The two opioid and addiction hours of NRS 632.2375 are the only prescriber-specific continuing education and are gated on the Board of Pharmacy registration above.
  • Compacts: Nevada has not enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact (SB 34 of the 2025 session, which would have adopted it, died without a hearing), so an RN from a compact state needs a single-state Nevada license, and the APRN Compact is not in effect. No multistate handling applies.
