Cycle and record rules

Renewal
The renewal cycle is biennial, and your license renews at the end of your birth month.
Renewal fee
The board renewal fee is $85 every 2 years.
New licensees
No continuing nursing education is required at the first renewal of a Kansas RN license obtained by examination, because K.S.A. 65-1117(a) excepts "the first renewal for a license that expires within thirty months following licensure examination" and every first license by examination expires inside that window (K.A.R. 60-3-108(b)); the Board CNE page says the same. The hours are waived outright, not deferred to a longer first period. A license obtained by endorsement or reinstatement is exempt only if it "expires within the first nine months following licensure by reinstatement or endorsement"; an endorsement licensee whose first Kansas expiration is more than nine months out owes the 30 hours and should disregard this waiver. The APRN license has no first-renewal exemption (K.S.A. 65-1132(a); K.A.R. 60-11-113(b)): the 30 APRN-role hours are owed from the first APRN renewal and, under 60-11-113(h), also satisfy the RN renewal.
Approved providers
Hours must be "approved continuing nursing education": "An offering presented by an approved provider or national organization whose focus is patient safety and improving nursing practice, including the following: American academy of nurse practitioners, American association of critical-care nurses, American midwifery certification board, American nurses association, American nurses credentialing center, emergency nurses association, national board of certification and recertification for nurse anesthetists, and pediatric nursing certification board" (K.A.R. 60-9-106(c)(1)); offerings of Kansas-approved long-term (LT#) and single-offering (SP#) providers under K.S.A. 65-1119 and K.A.R. 60-9-107; providers approved by other state boards of nursing; independent study and distance learning (60-9-106(c)(6)-(7)); ACLS, PALS, ENPC, TNCC, NRP and Mandt courses (c)(5), with renewals of those certifications capped at 15 hours per period (60-9-106(e)); and nursing-board or state-board service, up to six hours and no more than three a year (c)(9). Anything else, including college courses and continuing medical education, needs an individual offering approval (IOA) "before the individual submits the license renewal application" (60-11-113(d); 60-9-106(c)(3)). Not recognized: "Identical offerings completed within a renewal period", basic-preparation content, "in-service education, on-the-job training, orientation, and institution-specific courses", incomplete or general-education college courses, "offerings less than 30 minutes in length" and a refresher course taken for renewal (60-9-106(f)). Hours count only between "the first date of the licensing period and the date that the licensee submits the renewal application" and never carry over (60-9-106(b); 60-11-113(b)).
Recordkeeping
Keep CE documentation for 2 years after each renewal.
Board audit
The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
Late renewal
A late renewal adds a late fee.

To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.

Kansas PMHNP required trainings and mandates

Beyond the 30-hour CE total, Kansas requires specific trainings. Some are due once around initial licensure, and others run on their own recurring schedule.

Recurring mandates outside the 2-year cycle

  • Proof of malpractice insurance coverage at APRN renewal for an APRN who renders professional clinical services (K.S.A. 65-1130(d)(5); K.A.R. 60-11-113(j)), unless covered under the federal or Kansas tort claims act, practicing solely as a charitable healthcare provider, or on active military duty. A renewal condition, not continuing education; no hours are owed and the statute names none. Applies to the APRN row only.
Full board policy details
  • One set of hours for both licenses. The RN rule asks 30 contact hours per licensing period (K.A.R. 60-9-106); the APRN rule asks 30 contact hours "related to the advanced practice registered nurse role" (60-11-113(b)) on "the same biennial cycle" (60-11-113(a)), and "All CNE accumulated for APRN license renewal shall also be applicable to the renewal of the registered professional nurse license" (60-11-113(h)). The statute agrees: APRN credits "may be applied to satisfy the continuing education requirements established by the board for licensed professional nurses under K.S.A. 65-1117 ... if the board finds such continuing education credits are equivalent" (K.S.A. 65-1132(a)(2)). The relationship test runs one way: hours that are not related to the APRN role count for the RN only. The engine does not judge relatedness, so a PMHNP should log APRN-role hours (psychiatric, pharmacology, advanced practice content) for both rows; the Board's audit asks for "certificates or learning objectives if the certificate does not state the course is approved for advanced practice nurses" (Board CNE page). The RN and APRN licenses are renewed as two applications in the same portal session ("you must submit a renewal for both licenses", Board renewal page) with separate fees.
  • National certification does not replace the hours. Since July 1, 2023 an initial APRN applicant "shall have a current advanced practice registered nurse certification in such applicant's specific role and population focus that has been granted by a national certifying organization recognized by the board", and "an advanced practice registered nurse whose initial licensure is prior to July 1, 2023, may submit evidence of such certification to the board upon renewal" (K.S.A. 65-1130(b)(2); K.A.R. 60-11-113(i)). The Board recognizes AANPCB, AACN, AMCB, ANCC, NBCRNA, NCC and PNCB. Neither the statute nor the rule accepts certification in lieu of the 30 contact hours (contrast Texas and North Carolina), so nothing here is gated on `pmhnp bc`; the certification's own 75 hours are governed by us-pmhnp bc.yaml, and the ANCC-accredited hours a certificant logs are approved CNE here (60-9-106(c)(1)).
  • Prescribers owe no extra hours. Since S Sub for HB 2279 (L. 2022, ch. 65, effective July 1, 2022) an APRN "may prescribe durable medical equipment and prescribe, procure and administer any drug consistent with such licensee's specific role and population focus, except an advanced practice registered nurse shall not prescribe any drug that is intended to cause an abortion" (K.S.A. 65-1130(d)(1)) without a collaborative agreement or protocol, and "In order to prescribe controlled substances, the advanced practice registered nurse shall: (A) Register with the federal drug enforcement administration; and (B) comply with federal drug enforcement administration requirements related to controlled substances" (65-1130(d)(3)); K.A.R. 60-11-104a(a)(3) repeats that any APRN may "prescribe, procure, or administer any drug that is a controlled substance ... in accordance with the uniform controlled substances act". There is no Kansas pharmacology, opioid, pain management or controlled-substance CE for APRNs, no one-time prescribing course and no prescriptive-authority renewal; prescriptive authority is part of the APRN license. The only prescriber education is the federal MATE Act training on the DEA row (us-dea.yaml), so nothing is gated on `prescribing`, `prescribes opioids` or a `dea` sibling.
  • No state controlled-substance registration. The Board of Pharmacy registers persons who "manufacture, distribute or dispense any controlled substance within this state" (K.S.A. 65-4116(a)), but "The following persons need not register ... (5) any person licensed by the state board of healing arts ... (8) a mid-level practitioner" (65-4116(c)), and "Mid-level practitioner" means "an advanced practice registered nurse issued a license pursuant to K.S.A. 65-1131 ... who has authority to prescribe drugs under K.S.A. 65-1130" (K.S.A. 65-1626(tt), as amended by HB 2279). An APRN "may not dispense drugs" (65-1130(d)(2)), so no dispensing registration arises either. K-TRACS, the Kansas prescription monitoring program (K.S.A. 65-1681 et seq.; 65-1683 sets dispenser reporting), is a Board of Pharmacy database: the Board asks prescribers to register for an account (DEA number, NPI, Kansas license number) and offers an optional K-TRACS course, but the account is not a registration to prescribe and carries no CE. No `csr` row for Kansas.
  • Malpractice insurance is a renewal condition, not CE. "An advanced practice registered nurse shall maintain malpractice insurance coverage as a condition of rendering professional clinical services as an advanced practice registered nurse in this state and shall provide proof of insurance at the time of licensure and renewal of license", except an APRN who "Practices solely in employment for which the advanced practice registered nurse is covered under the federal tort claims act or the Kansas tort claims act", "practices solely as a charitable healthcare provider under K.S.A. 75-6102" or "is serving on active duty in the armed forces" (K.S.A. 65-1130(d)(5); K.A.R. 60-11-113(j)). APRNs are health care providers under the Health Care Stabilization Fund (K.S.A. 40-3401 et seq.). Carried as an external mandate so the audit packet lists it.
  • No statewide topic mandates. Kansas has no implicit bias, human trafficking, suicide prevention, ethics, infection control, cultural competency or opioid CE for nurses; K.S.A. 65-1119, which 60-9-106(c)(2) cross-references, governs provider approval and names no subject. The certification-renewal courses the Board caps (ACLS, PALS, ENPC, TNCC, NRP, Mandt: 15 hours per period, 60-9-106(e)) and board service (six hours, three a year, (c)(9)) are the only other activity limits; they are documented here rather than modeled because the credit picker has no bucket for life-support recertification and board service is rare for this population.
  • Reinstatement. An RN may, "within five years of its expiration date, reinstate that license by submitting satisfactory proof" of "30 contact hours of approved continuing nursing education within the preceding two-year period"; after five years, current licensure in a jurisdiction with an equivalent CE requirement, licensure elsewhere in the preceding five years plus the 30 hours, or a board-approved refresher course (K.A.R. 60-3-105). An APRN lapsed five years or less reinstates on "30 hours of continuing nursing education related to the advanced practice registered nurse role" in the preceding two years or on licensure elsewhere plus 1,000 practice hours in the preceding five years; beyond five years, the hours plus practice or a refresher course (K.A.R. 60-11-116(b)-(c)). The catch-up equals the standard 30, so no reactivation block is needed; a license "that expires within the first nine months following licensure by reinstatement" is CE-exempt at that renewal (K.S.A. 65-1117(a)).
  • Compacts. Kansas implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact on July 1, 2019 (K.S.A. 65-1117(a) and (d) refer to "multi-state licenses under the nurse licensure compact"); a Kansas-resident RN may hold a multistate RN license renewed on this same birth-month cycle at the same $85 fee (K.A.R. 60-4-101). "The NLC does not impact APRN licensure", the Board cannot issue multistate APRN licenses, and HB 2266 (2025), which would have enacted the APRN Compact, died in committee, so every Kansas APRN license is a single-state license. An APRN whose RN privilege is another compact state's multistate license still renews the Kansas APRN license here and must show "proof of evidence of current licensure as a professional nurse" (K.S.A. 65-1132(a)(3)).

Kansas PMHNP CE: frequently asked questions

Which credentials does a Kansas PMHNP renew?

4 separate credentials, each on its own renewal date: the APRN (Kansas, biennial), the RN (Kansas, biennial), the PMHNP-BC (ANCC, every 5 years), and the DEA (DEA, triennial). Kansas issues no separate CSR. A lapse at any one of them stops prescribing.

How many CE hours do Kansas PMHNP licensees need?

Kansas requires 30 continuing education hours every 2 years to renew a PMHNP license. The renewal cycle is biennial, and your license renews at the end of your birth month.

How often do Kansas PMHNP licensees renew?

The renewal cycle is biennial, and your license renews at the end of your birth month.

How much does Kansas PMHNP license renewal cost?

The board's renewal fee is $85 every 2 years, per the Kansas board fee schedule. CE course costs are separate and set by course providers.

Is the first renewal different for new Kansas PMHNP licensees?
