Full board policy details
  • All 30 hours may be completed via distance learning / home study. Interactive courses or self-study with a post-test/assessment are not subject to the self-study cap; only unsupervised reading/viewing without an evaluation is capped at 5 hours per cycle.
  • Self-directed learning projects must be preapproved by the board and are capped at 10 hours per renewal period (K.A.R. 102-3-10a). This is a separate category from unsupervised reading/audiovisual without a post-test (capped at 5 hours).
  • One CE hour equals 50 minutes of instruction; credit may be claimed in 15-minute increments. No per-day or per-conference maximum.
  • Identical programs/courses cannot be counted twice within the same renewal period. Instructors/presenters receive credit only for the FIRST-time preparation and presentation of a given course (max 10 hours); subsequent deliveries earn no further credit. Publication credit is granted only for the first publication of a given work.
  • Unused CE hours may NOT be carried forward to the next renewal period.
  • Excluded from CE credit: in-service trainings specific to an employing agency, basic life support / CPR, OSHA / occupational health and safety courses.
  • Kansas does not pre-approve providers or courses; the licensee is responsible for ensuring the content is within scope of practice and retaining documentation. Courses from NBCC ACE, APA, NASW, AMFTRB-approved sponsors, accredited universities, and governmental agencies are generally accepted.
  • License status: Kansas has no formal 'inactive' or 'retired' status. A license either remains active (with CE) or expires. Reactivation after expiration ≤1 year requires paying the renewal fee plus a penalty fee equal to the renewal fee and showing the full 30 hours for the last 24-month period. Reactivation after expiration >1 year may use a one-time, non-renewable 6-month reinstatement temporary license to complete deficient CE.
  • No CE or renewal extensions: the BSRB does not grant extensions for license renewal or for completing continuing education. A licensee who cannot complete the required CE and renew by the expiration date must let the license expire and then reinstate (see License status, above).
