Full board policy details
  • Michigan does not require general continuing education hours for LPC or Limited LPC license renewal. Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.1777 (license renewal) contains no general CE-hour requirement. The only renewal training mandates are the recurring implicit bias training and the one-time human trafficking training (both modeled as requirements above). There are otherwise no format constraints, no provider-approval requirements, no caps on self-study or online learning, no required topics (ethics, telehealth, supervision, etc.), and no instructor/teaching/publication credit framework for these licenses.
  • Implicit bias training (Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.7004) took effect June 1, 2022 and applies to renewals on or after that date. Licensees must complete 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of the renewal cycle (3 hours per 3-year LPC cycle). Training must cover strategies to recognize and mitigate implicit bias in healthcare delivery, include an assessment component, and be offered by an acceptable sponsor (healthcare organization, governmental agency, accredited college/university, or diversity/inclusion training organization). Per R. 338.7004(2), the same training cannot be counted more than once per renewal cycle and excess hours do not carry forward to the next cycle. Completed implicit bias training may also be used to satisfy other training or continuing education requirements for license renewal, unless prohibited by the Public Health Code or board rules (R. 338.7004) — though Michigan imposes no general CE requirement for LPC/LLPC renewal, so this permission has no present effect for these license types. Initial applicants must show 2 hours of implicit bias training completed within the 5 years prior to license issuance.
  • Course repeat restrictions: No general CE credit framework exists for Michigan LPCs, so there are no rules restricting repeated courses or granting credit for teaching/presentation beyond the implicit bias training mandate (R. 338.7004), which prohibits counting the same implicit bias training more than once per renewal cycle and disallows carry-over of excess bias hours to the next cycle.
  • License status rules: Michigan does not provide a formal inactive or retired status for LPC licenses that would alter training obligations. If a license lapses, the licensee must pursue relicensure under section 18114 of the Public Health Code, which may require retaking and passing the licensing examination to demonstrate competency (Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.1776). No catch-up CE is required upon reactivation; reactivation is governed by statutory relicensure procedures rather than CE.
  • Limited Licensed Counselors (LLPC) renew annually rather than triennially and may not renew more than 10 times, with up to 3 additional one-year renewals permitted in hardship cases (R. 338.1777). The implicit bias training requirement of 1 hour per year of the renewal cycle still applies; no general CE is required for limited license renewals.
  • Telehealth practice (R. 338.1758) requires informed consent and in-person-equivalent standard of care, but imposes no telehealth-specific CE or training requirement.
  • Supervisor qualification (R. 338.1781): LPCs who wish to supervise Limited LPCs must complete a one-time supervision training (a 2-semester-hour graduate course or 30 contact hours of workshop training) and meet post-master's experience requirements (3 years if first supervised on/before Jan 1, 2013; 5 years if after May 5, 2022). This is a prerequisite credential, not a recurring CE requirement.
