RequirementNotes
Total continuing educationSee the board source for the total-hour requirement.
RenewalTriennial cycle: counted from your license anniversary.
RecordkeepingKeep CE documentation for 6 years after each renewal.
Board auditThe board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
Other mandatesOne-time training in identifying victims of human trafficking, required by MCL 333.16148 and Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.7202. Must be completed prior to initial licensure (or by first renewal after the mandate took effect). Content must cover the defined topic areas (types of trafficking, warning signs, reporting resources). No minimum hour count is specified. This is a permanent one-and-done obligation; it does not recur each renewal cycle. A human trafficking training already completed under another Michigan health profession license satisfies this requirement and need not be repeated for the LMFT/LLMFT license.
Other mandatesImplicit bias training required by Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.7004 for all Article 15 licensees except veterinarians. Required at a rate of 1 hour per year of the license cycle (3 hours per 3-year LMFT cycle; 1 hour per 1-year LLMFT cycle). Recurring each renewal/relicensure. Excess hours may not be carried to the next cycle, and identical/substantially identical training may not be counted twice in one cycle. The training content must focus on recognizing and mitigating implicit biases and the health disparities that result from them.

Keeping the proof in order: what to keep for a CE audit, with every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.

Michigan LMFT & LLMFTrequired trainings & mandates

Michigan also requires specific trainings — some once around initial licensure, some on their own recurring schedule.

Recurring mandates outside the 3 years cycle

  • One-time training in identifying victims of human trafficking, required by MCL 333.16148 and Mich. Admin. Code R. Full board policy details
  • Michigan does not require any general (discretionary) continuing-education clock hours for LMFT or LLMFT renewal. The only renewal requirements are the implicit bias training (recurring) and the one-time human trafficking training, plus the fee and completed application. There are no format caps or minimums on general CE because no general CE hours exist.
  • COURSE REPEAT RESTRICTIONS: There is no general CE course-repetition rule because no general CE hours are required. The only repetition restriction is that a licensee shall not earn implicit bias training hours for a training that is identical or substantially identical to one already completed in the same renewal cycle. There are no rules on repeating teaching presentations because Michigan awards no CE credit for teaching or publication for this license.
  • LICENSE STATUS RULES: Michigan offers no formal inactive/retired LMFT status; a non-practicing licensee simply lets the license lapse and has no CE obligations while lapsed. Reactivation is handled via relicensure (R 338.7215). If expired 3 years or less, relicensure requires the standard application, fee, good moral character, and completion of any required trainings (including implicit bias for the lapsed period at 1 hour per year). If expired more than 3 years, the applicant must pass the national MFT licensing exam (or approved equivalent) within the 3 years prior to reapplication, unless they held an active MFT license in another jurisdiction during the interim. No make-up CE hours are required. Boards may waive CE requirements for active military duty or hardship, but this is moot for MFT since no CE hours are mandated.
  • Relicensure for a license expired more than 3 years requires passing the national MFT licensing exam or an approved equivalent within the prior 3 years, unless the applicant held an active MFT license in another state during the interim (out-of-state active licensure substitutes for re-examination).
