- Both face-to-face (physically attended, live in-person) instruction and approved home-study programs qualify. There is no cap on self-study hours and no minimum live/in-person requirement; all 15 hours may be earned via qualifying home study. Home-study programs must include a proficiency exam/verification and be offered or approved by a recognized sponsor (e.g., AAMFT or a regionally accredited institution). Live online/webinar CE is accepted but is classified as home study unless physically attended, so the provider must monitor attendance or include a post-test. Recognized sponsors include AAMFT and state chapters, COAMFTE, NBCC, ACA, NASW, ASWB, APA and their affiliates, plus regionally accredited colleges/universities and graduate-level coursework related to marital and family therapy.
- Maximum credit is 8 contact hours in any one calendar day.
- Content on practice management, office administration, marketing, or other business aspects of practice is limited to 6 contact hours per renewal period.
- COURSE REPEAT RESTRICTIONS: Presenting an original lecture, workshop, or paper to professional peers earns 5 contact hours for the first presentation only; repeat presentations of the same material earn no additional credit. An original paper or book chapter published in a peer-reviewed forum earns 6 contact hours for the first publication only. The regulation does not state a general repeat-course prohibition for attendees.
- LICENSE STATUS RULES: A licensee not engaged in active practice may apply (notarized, before the registration period ends) to waive the CE requirement for that renewal period (inactive status); no CE is required for that year but the licensee may not practice. Connecticut has no formal retired-license category; a retiring licensee may let the license lapse or renew under the inactive/waiver process. A licensee returning from inactive status must successfully complete 7 contact hours of qualifying CE before returning to active practice; those 7 hours also count toward the current registration period's 15-hour requirement (they are not in addition to it). DPH may grant hardship waivers or extensions of up to one year for medical disability/illness (with physician verification) or for good cause; extensions are renewable on reapplication.
