Full board policy details
- The fixed 24-month cycle expires on December 31 of even-numbered years. Licensees active for at least 18 months of the concluding period owe the full 45 hours; those active for 12 to fewer than 18 months owe 30 hours; those active for fewer than 12 months owe 23 hours.
- All CE content must be directly related to the skills and knowledge required for marital and family therapy and must contribute to the licensee's professional competency. Accepted provider disciplines describe possible sponsors; every individual activity must still satisfy the MFT content-relatedness and professional-competency standard.
- The recurring 2-hour clinical-supervision CE requirement applies only to LMFTs holding board-approved-supervisor status, not to every LMFT who supervises in some capacity.
- At least 50% of the required CE hours must be earned through live/synchronous interaction (in-person or real-time interactive webinars). No more than one-half of the required hours may be earned through individual study or formal correspondence (asynchronous) programs. Real-time interactive webinars/videoconferences count as live.
- Academic coursework converts at one semester credit = 15 CE hours; one quarter credit = 10 CE hours. Audited courses count only actual in-class hours, not to exceed the credit's hour value.
- Credit for teaching/presenting is limited to first-time preparation and presentation of an MFT course or workshop, capped at 10 hours per cycle (split among co-presenters).
- Credit for first-time presentation or publication of an article or book chapter in the MFT field is capped at 10 hours per cycle (split among multiple authors/presenters).
- Other courses not covered by the standard acceptable categories require specific board preapproval and are limited to a maximum of 15 contact hours per cycle.
- COURSE REPEAT RESTRICTIONS: Instructors receive CE credit only for the first-time preparation and presentation of a given course; subsequent presentations of the same material in the same renewal period earn no additional credit. The rules are silent on attendees repeating the same course; duplicate credit for identical course content within a single cycle would likely be disallowed in an audit, though this is not codified.
- LICENSE STATUS RULES: Alaska has no inactive, retired, or emeritus license status for LMFTs. An unrenewed license simply expires; while expired, the licensee owes no CE and cannot practice. To reinstate an expired license (12 AAC 19.340(a)), the licensee must submit proof of completion of ALL required continuing education credit hours that were required at the time the license lapsed, plus meet all other renewal requirements. No time limit on reinstatement is specified. A licensee unable to complete CE due to reasonable cause or excusable neglect may request a written exemption; the board may prescribe an alternative method of compliance case-by-case (no fixed maximum extension).
- Multi-license holders: A practitioner licensed under both the LMFT board and another Alaska behavioral health board must independently meet each board's CE requirements; Alaska has not codified any cross-credit or dual-license CE reuse policy.
