Full board policy details
  • Self-study/individual study (formal correspondence, noninteractive electronic media, or other individual study) may not exceed one-half of the total hours required in any licensing renewal period (12 AAC 60.310(b)). Non-college individual-study sources must meet 12 AAC 60.300(b); college/university individual-study hours must be graduate-level (12 AAC 60.310(c)-(d)).
  • At least half of the required CE hours must be obtained by means of live interactive programs, courses, or training sessions (12 AAC 60.260(c), effective 5/3/2025). "Live interactive" means students and instructors engage with the content and each other at the same time in real time; it may be in-person or through the Internet and may not be pre-recorded or self-study (12 AAC 60.260(d)). Live interactive online courses are treated as live, not self-study.
  • Academic coursework must be from a regionally accredited college/university and, for periods on/after July 1, 2007, must be graduate-level (12 AAC 60.280(e), 60.310(c)). Auditing an academic course is creditable (12 AAC 60.270(d)).
  • COURSE REPEAT RESTRICTIONS: Instructor/discussion-leader credit is awarded only for the initial course of instruction of a subject matter unless there have been substantially new developments in the subject since the prior presentation (12 AAC 60.320(a)). Instructor credit is capped at one-third of the required total and may not be claimed in the same renewal in which publications/presentations credit is claimed (12 AAC 60.320(b), 60.330(b)). MANUAL REVIEW — INSTRUCTOR/PUBLICATION MUTUAL EXCLUSION NOT ENFORCED: the engine has no cross-credit exclusion primitive, so a licensee claiming both instructor and publication credit in one renewal is not flagged automatically; check at audit/review. No express prohibition on an attendee taking the same course twice; attendee admissibility is governed by the subject/competency test in 12 AAC 60.290.
  • LICENSE STATUS RULES: No inactive or retired psychologist tier exists — 12 AAC 02.330 establishes no inactive/retired fee or status, so a licensee either maintains an active (fully CE-compliant) license or the license lapses. Reactivation/reinstatement requires submission of proof of completion of ALL required CE credit hours for the concluding period (12 AAC 60.340(a); 12 AAC 02.965(a)); with board approval those credits may be earned after expiration but may not be reused for a future renewal. A license lapsed for five years or more may not be renewed (AS 08.01.100(d)). Hardship/illness/military/ disability relief: a licensee unable to obtain required CE due to reasonable cause or excusable neglect (chronic illness, retirement, military service, or board-determined hardship — 12 AAC 60.990(a)(4)) must request exemption status in writing; the board prescribes an alternative method of compliance case-by-case (12 AAC 60.340(b)). Active- duty military CE waiver available under AS 08.01.100(f)-(g). MANUAL REVIEW: reactivation makeup obligation is duration/period-dependent and not represented as a fixed conditional requirement.
  • No carryover of excess CE hours is permitted; Article 6 is silent on carry-forward, and 12 AAC 02.965(a) bars reinstatement/lapse-cure credits from satisfying future renewals.
  • No CE-shortfall conditional/provisional registration exists. Per AS 08.01.100(c), CE requirements must be satisfied before a license is renewed; a licensee short on CE must seek a hardship exemption/alternative compliance (12 AAC 60.340(b)) or let the license lapse and reinstate after completing all required CE. The only automatic extension is an administrative auto-extension of up to three months when a complete renewal application/ payment was submitted (12 AAC 02.940(e)) — not a CE cure.
