Full board policy details
- FORMAT CAPS/MINIMUMS: The 6 professional-ethics credits (3 for a first-renewal in the odd year of the biennium) must be earned in person or via synchronous webinar (real-time online interactive video conference); asynchronous/recorded ethics does not qualify. There is otherwise NO minimum in-person requirement and NO numeric cap on self-study/asynchronous CE — up to all 40 credits may be earned asynchronously through Area III. The pre-2023 "Area V – Self Instructional" 10-hour cap was removed effective 2023-10-15; third-party summaries reciting it describe the superseded rule.
- AREA STRUCTURE: Georgia organizes CE into three lettered Areas. Area I (Academic) max 20 CE. Area II (Ongoing Group Consultation) has a CONDITIONAL minimum of 10 CE (if a licensee claims any Area II credit they must claim at least 10) and a max of 20; but no Area is mandatory to use. Area III (Approved Sponsored Continuing Education) max 40. There is NO rule requiring hours from a minimum number of different Areas — the full 40 may be met in Area III alone.
- ACCEPTABILITY STANDARDS: CE must be relevant to the licensee's professional activities. Ethics content must relate to ethical, legal, statutory, or regulatory policies/guidelines/standards impacting psychology and must be postdoctoral in nature. Area III sponsored CE must come from qualifying organizations: State Psychological Associations, APA or its approved sponsors (APA Sponsor Approval System), Canadian Psychological Association approved sponsors, the Academies of the Specialty Boards of ABPP, Association for Psychological Science, National Association of School Psychologists, regionally accredited educational institutions offering graduate training in psychology or related fields, Federal and State Government entities providing post-doctoral training by licensed psychologists, and Category I CME of the AMA, Canadian Medical Association, American Bar Association, and Canadian Bar Association if relevant to the practice of psychology.
- COURSE REPEAT RESTRICTIONS: Instruction credit under Area I counts only when the course or presentation is conducted for the FIRST time; an instructor may not claim CE for re-teaching/re-presenting the same course or workshop. Publication credit is limited to first/second authorship (max 5 CE/article, 10/biennium). Area II group consultation requires a structured group of 3–8 licensed psychologists led by an unencumbered Georgia licensee (min 10, max 20 credits). The rule does not expressly prohibit taking the same sponsored Area III course twice in a cycle (silent).
- LICENSE STATUS RULES: A licensee may apply for Inactive Status (510-7-.03); no CE is imposed during inactivity, and the inactive licensee may not practice or use the title. Georgia has no separate "retired" status that exempts from CE; retired psychologists may obtain a License for Volunteer Service (510-9-.04), which requires 20 CE hours in the two years prior to application. Reactivation of an inactive license requires reinstatement under 510-7-.02 with documentation of 40 hours of CE completed within two years of the application. A lapsed license reinstated within one year requires the same 40 hours within two years; reinstatement after more than 12 months additionally requires passing the Georgia Jurisprudence and Oral Examinations (MANUAL REVIEW — the exam condition and >12-month tier are not engine-evaluable).
- DISABILITY ACCOMMODATION: Psychologists with disabilities may petition the Board for accommodations to satisfy CE; the written request with documentation must be received at least 2 months prior to the end of the renewal period. No general hardship/illness/military CE waiver is enumerated.
- WHOLE-REQUIREMENT SUBSTITUTION: Passing the ABPP board examination satisfies ALL CE for the biennium in which it is passed (510-8-.02(5)).
- PSYPACT OVERLAY (informational, NOT part of the Georgia 40-hour total): Georgia participates in PSYPACT. Telepsychology via ASPPB E.Passport + APIT and temporary in-person practice via IPC + TAP are mobility overlays issued by ASPPB/the PSYPACT Commission and renewed annually, separate from the Georgia license. The E.Passport renewal requires 3 hours of telepsychology-related CE annually — an ASPPB condition, not a Georgia Board requirement, applicable only to those electing PSYPACT telepsychology authority. Prescriptive authority (RxP) is not available to psychologists in Georgia.
- LICENSE FOR VOLUNTEER SERVICE: Renewal otherwise follows the psychology-license requirements on the timeline established by the consent order; initial eligibility requires 20 CE hours completed in the prior two years.
