Full board policy details
- FORMAT CAPS/MINIMUMS: Not more than 15 hours of the 30 may come from an approved home study course. At least 15 hours must be live/face-to-face. A real-time, interactive online course is NOT home study (NAC 641.007 defines home study as on-demand instruction with no ability to communicate with the instructor in real time) and counts as live. Not more than 15 hours of approved continuing professional development (CPD) may be applied.
- CPD FRAMEWORK (NAC 641.136(3), added by R001-25) — capped at 15 hours total. Group 3(a) not more than 3 hours in each: peer consultation (1 CE hr per hr); service on a governing board/committee/editorial board/scientific grant review team or association leadership (1 CE hr per hr); conference/convention attendance where CE is not otherwise offered (3 CE hrs per full day). Group 3(b) not more than 6 hours in each: completing a doctoral-level psychology course (CE hrs = course credits); teaching a Board-approved CE course (1 CE hr); teaching a semester of an APA-accredited graduate-level applied psychology course incl. preparation (6 CE hrs); authoring a book/chapter/peer-reviewed manuscript accepted for publishing (6 CE hrs). Separately, NAC 641.1365 awards up to 8 CE hours per 2-year period for Board-appointed exam development or Board-approved committee service.
- ACCEPTABILITY STANDARDS: Ordinary coursework is credited 1 CE hour per clock hour; a course must be at least 1 hour in length, not including breaks (NAC 641.137(1)(b)). Accepted course/program types (NAC 641.136(2)): (a) formally organized workshops/seminars/classes with an attendance roster under an accredited institution of higher education offering graduate instruction; (b) workshops/seminars/classes with an attendance roster certified or recognized by a state, national or international accrediting agency, including the APA, American Psychiatric Association, AMA, AAMFT, ACA, International Congress of Psychology, or NASW; (c) other Board-approved workshops/classes/seminars/training in psychology or a closely related discipline with a formal curriculum and attendance roster; (d) Board-approved home study courses in psychology or a closely related discipline. For the three mandated topics (ethics, suicide prevention, cultural competency/DEI), the specific course must be submitted to the Board for approval unless already approved (NAC 641.136(4); NAC 641.138).
- COURSE REPEAT RESTRICTIONS: R001-25 deleted the prior clause barring credit for a course in which the licensee is the instructor. Teaching credit is now affirmatively granted (1 CE hr for teaching a Board-approved CE course, capped at 6 hours; 6 hours for teaching a semester of an APA-accredited graduate course). The 6-hour category cap is the effective limit on repeated teaching. No 'same course only once per cycle' restriction and no 'same material as prior period' restriction exist in NAC 641.136–641.139.
- LICENSE STATUS RULES: A psychologist may place the license on inactive status (NAC 641.133); while inactive the licensee shall not practice psychology and renews on inactive status by paying the inactive renewal fee (no active-CE requirement while inactive). No separate 'retired' status exists. Reactivation of an inactive license and reinstatement of an expired license both require proof of 30 hours of CE completed during the previous biennium (NAC 641.133(4)(c)). Make-up hours completed in the current biennium to cover a prior shortfall cannot be reused to satisfy the next renewal. Relief mechanism: a 60-day extension (NAC 641.132(4)) may be granted if a written request with a compelling explanation is submitted on or before December 1 immediately preceding expiration; the extension is not renewable.
- COURSE APPROVAL PROCEDURE: A sponsor seeking approval under NAC 641.138 must submit the Board's application at least 30 days before the course. Reinstatement after fee suspension is permitted within two years upon payment; after two years the Board must also determine that the holder remains competent to practice psychology.
