Approved providers
"A counselor will receive credit for hours of continuing education only if the course or program of education from which the counselor obtained the hours of continuing education has been approved by the Board" (NAC 641C.310(1)). Courses "presented or approved by NAADAC, the Division of Public and Behavioral Health of the Department of Health and Human Services, the International Gambling Counselor Certification Board, the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling or the Addiction Technology Transfer Center" are deemed approved (641C.320(4)). A course "primarily related to alcohol and drug abuse counseling, addiction, codependency" or problem gambling counseling is also deemed approved when approved by the Nevada Board of Psychological Examiners, Board of Examiners for Marriage and Family Therapists and Clinical Professional Counselors, Board of Examiners for Social Workers, Board of Medical Examiners, State Board of Osteopathic Medicine, State Board of Nursing, the National Council on Problem Gambling, or "Any other similar occupational licensing board in another state, territory, protectorate or the District of Columbia" (641C.320(5)). Any other course needs Board approval, which a provider or the counselor may request (641C.310(2)-(3)).
Recordkeeping
Keep CE documentation for 3 years after each renewal.
Board audit
The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
Late renewal
The board allows a 60-day grace period after expiration. A late renewal adds a $75 late fee.

To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.

Full board policy details
  • Biennial, licensee-specific cycle: "A license as a clinical alcohol and drug counselor is valid for 2 years and may be renewed" (NRS 641C.331(1)); the same words govern the LADC (641C.360(1)) and the CADC (641C.390(3)). The renewal application is due "on or before the date on which the license or certificate expires" (NAC 641C.235(1)(a)) with an affidavit for "the 2 years immediately preceding the date of the application" (NAC 641C.305(1)). The cycle is therefore the two years ending on the licensee's own printed expiration date.
  • Statutory floors from NRS 641C.450(3): three hours a year of cultural competency and diversity, equity and inclusion (six per two-year term, since January 1, 2024 under AB 267 (2023); one hour a year before that), and, for renewals through June 30, 2026 only, one hour a year of evidence-based suicide prevention and awareness (two per term). The Board's regulation, NAC 641C.300, has not been amended to restate either; both are read as part of the 40 hours because the statute makes them part of "the continuing education required by the Board". The statute says "for each year of the term"; whether the Board requires the hours to fall in each year, rather than anywhere in the term, is not stated, and the rule models six (and two) per cycle.
  • Repeated material: "A counselor who takes a program of continuing education which presents the same material that the counselor took during the previous 2-year period will not get credit for taking the subsequent program of continuing education" (NAC 641C.300(5)). The rule looks back into the previous period, which the engine's within-cycle repeat check does not reach, so it is stated here rather than enforced.
  • Accepted formats and exclusions: the Board "will consider a course or program of education presented in the form of lectures, seminars, workshops, academic courses at an institution of higher education or correspondence courses", but not hours "applied toward the completion of a degree or on-the-job training" (NAC 641C.320(2)). It will not approve "An orientation program for new employees", agency on-the-job training on its own policies, "An audio or a video learning tape or home study course for which there is no independent verification of successful completion", or "A program for self-improvement" (NAC 641C.315). There is no ceiling on distance or self-study hours; a home-study course counts only with independent verification of completion, such as a post-test certificate.
  • Alternative activities (NAC 641C.300(7)-(9)): one hour per certified intern supervised, up to five interns at a time and "Not more than 10 hours ... during any one year"; one hour per peer-reviewed article in alcohol, drug or gambling counseling, or per Board-approved newsletter article, up to five per two-year period; one hour each time the counselor serves as an examiner for the Board's oral examination, up to five per two-year period. Intern-supervision hours do not count toward the ten supervisor-certificate hours of 641C.300(6).
  • Dual licensure: NAC 641C sets no reduced or combined total for a counselor who also holds a Nevada clinical professional counselor, marriage and family therapist, social work or psychology license, and each license renews on its own cycle with its own attestation. The overlap runs through provider approval: a course "primarily related to alcohol and drug abuse counseling, addiction, codependency" approved by one of those Nevada boards is deemed approved by this Board (NAC 641C.320(5)). An LCSW, LCPC, LMFT or master's-prepared nurse may qualify for the LADC with 1,000 rather than 3,000 supervised hours (NRS 641C.350(2)); that changes nothing about the CE owed afterwards. The other boards' practitioners are exempt from chapter 641C when authorized by their own board to counsel persons with substance use disorders (NRS 641C.130), so many dual-role clinicians hold no 641C credential at all.
  • Scope of the three credentials: the LCADC may engage in "the clinical practice of counseling persons with alcohol and other substance use disorders", diagnose substance use disorders and supervise interns (NRS 641C.331(2)); the LADC may practise, diagnose substance use disorders and supervise certified alcohol and drug counselor interns, but "may not identify, evaluate, diagnose or treat a mental illness when a person with mental illness also has an alcohol or other substance use disorder" (641C.360); the CADC may practise and diagnose substance use disorders and, after three years and Board approval, supervise interns (641C.390(4)). A CADC whose degree requirement was waived may serve only clients of federal tribal health programs (641C.390(2); NAC 641C.276, 641C.278). Interns practise only under supervision (641C.340(3), 641C.420) and owe training hours on a six-month schedule (NAC 641C.300(2)) that this rule does not scope.
