Cycle and record rules

Renewal
The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.
Approved providers
"All education hours must be accredited or approved by a recognized/approved accreditation body" (MHACBO CADC renewal page). MHACBO accepts education "provided within OHA state approved agencies, MHACBO accredited continuing education hours, any accredited colleges or universities" and "most national behavioral health education accreditors", including NAADAC, IC&RC, NBCC, APA, ASWB, NASW, AAMFT, ACCME, ANCC, IACET, OHA and DHS (Recertification Guide). Keep the certificate for every hour: MHACBO asks for copies with the renewal.
Board audit
The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
Late renewal
A late renewal adds a $50 late fee.

To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.

Full board policy details
  • Category II, general behavioral health, is optional and capped: "Optional - Category II: Counseling Education - Maximum 20 hours" (MHACBO CADC renewal page), covering "Managed Care, Counseling Survivors of Trauma, Psychiatric Disorders, general college psychology coursework, social work coursework, general behavioral health software training, ethics etc." (renewal form). The cap is the arithmetic complement of the 20-hour Category I floor inside a 40-hour total, so no separate cap is encoded.
  • Accepted sources. MHACBO accepts hours from OHA state approved agencies, MHACBO-accredited continuing education, accredited colleges and universities, and a published list of national accreditors (Recertification Guide). The list is broad and names organizations, not provider types the engine can test, so the provider gate is not enforced; a course from an unaccredited, unlisted source would still be refused by MHACBO at review. Accreditors named in the Recertification Guide include ACCME, AAMFT, AASECT, AMA, ANCC, the American Psychiatric and American Psychological Associations, ASWB, CCMC, CRCC, IACET, IC&RC, EAPA, MHACBO, NAADAC, NASW and its state chapters, NBCC, NCPG, Oregon DHS, OHA, ODVA and the Oregon State Bar.
  • Levels. CADC I (150 hours of alcohol and drug education and 1,000 supervised hours, IC&RC ADC exam), CADC II (bachelor's degree or 90 college credits, 300 education hours, 4,000 supervised hours, NAADAC NCAC II exam) and CADC III (master's degree, 300 education hours, 6,000 supervised hours, NAADAC MAC exam) all renew on the same 40-hour standard (MHACBO CADC I/II/III pages and Recertification Guide). None is a license to practise independently; OAR 309-019-0125 makes the credential a staffing qualification in OHA-certified programs.
  • Other Oregon licenses. Neither MHACBO nor OAR 309-019-0125 credits or reduces the 40 hours for a CADC who also holds an Oregon LPC, LMFT or LCSW. A course can serve both renewals if it meets each standard, but each credential is recertified separately on its own dates. OAR 309-019-0125 lets a clinician with a "health or allied provider license" plus 60 (staff) or 120 (supervisor) contact hours of SUD education work in a program without the CADC; a dual licensee who lets the CADC lapse on that basis owes nothing here.
  • Extensions and lapse. "A person can apply for a free 30 day extension, and a $50 120 day extension for each credential", and "A persons expiration date cannot be extended beyond 120 days" (MHACBO FAQ). "All MHACBO credentials, with the exception of the CRM, can be expired for up to 2 years and still renew"; beyond two years the holder must retake the credentialing exam (CADC II and III retake only the national exam, not the jurisprudence exam) (MHACBO FAQ). A program employee whose certification has expired is not certified for OAR 309-019-0125 purposes while it is expired, so the extension is the practical grace period.
  • Submission. Renew in Certemy: submit the CADC renewal form "at least two weeks before expiration" with the renewal fee (MHACBO CADC renewal page). "You must attach photocopies of certificates and/or transcripts to verify all education" (CADC renewal form). Hours are logged as clock hours.
