Total

30 hoursYou need 30 hours every 2 years. The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.

Topic minimums, counted within the 30

The remaining 27 hours are not tied to a topic minimum.
Ethics
3
You need 3 hours each cycle. Ethics hours must be earned through activities (d)(1) through (d)(4), (d)(9) or (d)(10): academic courses, seminars and workshops, post-tested self-study, a first-time presentation or a first-time publication (K.A.R. 102-7-9(b)). An ethics topic covered in a no-posttest activity, a cross-disciplinary offering, a self-directed project, supervision or professional service does not satisfy the three-hour floor. The engine counts any credit tagged ethics, so a licensee logging ethics through one of the excluded activities should not rely on it for the floor.

Cycle and record rules

Renewal
The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.
Renewal fee
The board renewal fee is $50 every 2 years, and a late (delinquent) renewal adds a $50 fee.
Approved providers
Kansas does not pre-approve CE providers or courses for addiction counselors. An hour counts when it is one of the activities listed in K.A.R. 102-7-9(d) and is "oriented to the enhancement of an addiction counselor's practice, values, ethics, skills, or knowledge"; the licensee keeps the original documentation described in K.A.R. 102-7-10 and shows it on audit. Hours must fall inside the 24-month period that ends at the license expiration, excess hours do not carry over, and an identical program cannot be claimed twice in one renewal period.
Board audit
The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
Late renewal
A late renewal adds a $50 late fee.
Provisional renewal
The board allows a provisional/conditional renewal for up to 3 months before full compliance is required. K.S.A. 65-6614(c): on a request filed at least 30 calendar days before expiration showing extenuating circumstances and a completion plan, "The board may grant a licensee up to three additional months beyond the license expiration date to complete the required continuing education hours." The license itself must still be renewed before it expires, the late hours credit only to the extended period, and extensions are not granted "in consecutive license periods". Separately, a license expired more than one year may be reinstated on a one-time, non-renewable six-month reinstatement temporary license (65-6614(e)(2)).

To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.

  • Formal courses, conferences and post-tested self-study each carry a 30-hour maximum that equals the whole requirement: an academic course taken for credit (d)(1), an audited academic course (d)(2), "a seminar, institute, conference, workshop, or course" (d)(3) and, "if a posttest is provided, an activity consisting of completing a computerized interactive learning module, viewing a telecast or videotape, listening to an audiotape, or reading" (d)(4) are each limited to 30 hours (K.A.R. 102-7-9(d)). Because 30 is also the total, the engine enforces each of these ceilings through the 30-hour total; no verdict can differ from capping them directly.
  • Self-study is unlimited when a posttest is provided: all 30 hours may be "completing a computerized interactive learning module, viewing a telecast or videotape, listening to an audiotape, or reading" with a posttest (K.A.R. 102-7-9(d)(4)). The same activities WITHOUT a posttest are limited to five hours per renewal period (102-7-9(d)(5)). A credit record does not capture whether an assessment was given, so the five-hour no-posttest ceiling is not encoded; an on-demand course with a completion certificate is the post-tested kind and is logged as self study without a cap.
  • Academic credit converts at 15 CE hours per academic credit hour for a course taken for credit, up to 30 (K.A.R. 102-7-9(d)(1)); an audited course earns its actual contact time, up to 15 hours per academic credit hour and 30 in all (102-7-9(d)(2)). Proof is "An official transcript or other proof indicating a passing grade" or, for an audited course, a signed instructor statement of contact hours (K.A.R. 102-7-10).
  • Ethics hours must be earned through activities (d)(1) through (d)(4), (d)(9) or (d)(10): academic courses, seminars and workshops, post-tested self-study, a first-time presentation or a first-time publication (K.A.R.
  • Repeat and exclusion rules: "Continuing education credit approval shall not be granted for identical programs if the programs are completed within the same renewal period" (K.A.R. 102-7-9(e)), and no credit is granted for "In-service training, if the training is for job orientation or job training or is specific to the employing agency" or for "any activity for which the licensee cannot demonstrate to the board's satisfaction that the program's goals and objectives are to enhance the licensee's practice, values, ethics, skills, or knowledge in addiction counseling" (102-7-9(f)). Presentation credit is for the first-time preparation and presentation or a substantial revision only (d)(9); publication credit is for material "published for the first time" (d)(10).
  • Excess hours do not carry forward: "Continuing education hours accumulated in excess of the requirement shall not be carried over to the next renewal period" (K.A.R. 102-7-9(a)). The 24-month window ends at the license expiration; hours "earned after board receipt of the renewal application form shall not be approved for continuing education credit for the period being audited" (K.A.R. 102-7-8(d)).
  • Dual licensure with another BSRB license: a Kansas LBSW, LMSW, LSCSW, LPC, LCPC, LMFT, LCMFT, LMLP, LCP or psychologist may obtain the LAC by examination (K.S.A. 65-6610(a)(2)(C) and (D)), and many LACs hold one. Each license expires 24 months from its own issuance and carries its own 30-hour requirement under its own article (K.A.R. 102-7-9 for the LAC, K.A.R. article 102-3 for counselors); the addiction rule neither grants nor forbids reporting one course to both boards' forms, and it says nothing about a reduced or combined total. The engine evaluates this license on its own 30 hours; a course logged here must be "oriented to the enhancement of an addiction counselor's practice, values, ethics, skills, or knowledge" (102-7-9(a)) to count.
  • Extension for unfinished hours: "A licensee who is unable to complete the required continuing education hours for renewal may request additional time", not later than 30 calendar days before expiration, with the reason and a completion plan; "The board may grant a licensee up to three additional months beyond the license expiration date". The licensee must still "Renew the license prior to the license expiration date and report to the board the number of continuing education hours completed on such date", is subject to audit, may credit the late hours only to the extended period, and "shall not be approved for additional time to complete continuing education requirements in consecutive license periods" (K.S.A. 65-6614(c)).
  • License status: the addiction counselor licensure act provides no inactive or retired status; a license not renewed by its expiration date expires. Reinstatement of an expired license requires the renewal fee "and, for any person whose license has been expired for one year or less, an additional fee equal to the renewal fee" plus "evidence satisfactory to the board that the person has completed during the previous 24 months the continuing education requirements for one license period" (K.S.A. 65-6614(e)(1)). A person expired longer than one year without the hours may take a non-renewable "six-month reinstatement temporary license" and must finish the CE before it expires (65-6614(e)(2)).
