Cycle and record rules
- Renewal
- The renewal cycle is triennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.
- Renewal fee
- The board renewal fee is $150 every 3 years, and a late (delinquent) renewal adds a $50 fee.
- Approved providers
- New York counts 60 clock hours of continuing education and training completed during the current three-year credential period (14 NYCRR 853.11(b)). OASAS does not pre-approve individual trainings: an acceptable training comes from an OASAS-approved Education and Training Provider or from "a nationally recognized federal, state, or local organization", such as NAADAC, SAMHSA or NASW, and "must pertain directly to the topic required" (https://oasas.ny.gov/system/files/documents/2023/05/approved_training.pdf). The six ethics hours must be OASAS-approved ethics training. Certificates are not filed with the renewal; the holder attests and keeps them for an audit.
- Recordkeeping
- Keep CE documentation for 6 years after each renewal.
- Board audit
- The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
- Late renewal
- A late renewal adds a $50 late fee.
To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.

Beyond the 60-hour CE total, New York requires specific trainings. Some are due once around initial licensure, and others run on their own recurring schedule.
One-time requirements
- "Person Centered Care (1 hour)", one of the trainings that "are mandatory one-time requirements that must be completed by applicants pursuing the CASAC and individuals renewing their CASAC credential" (https://oasas.ny.gov/one-time-requirements-casac-pdf). Provided free by Partnership to End Addiction. (1 hour, one time).
- "Cannabis Use Disorder Diagnostic Criteria and Assessment (1 hour)", a mandatory one-time requirement for applicants and renewing CASACs (https://oasas.ny.gov/one-time-requirements-casac-pdf). (1 hour, one time).
- "Opioid Overdose Prevention Basics (1 hour)", a mandatory one-time requirement for applicants and renewing CASACs (https://oasas.ny.gov/one-time-requirements-casac-pdf). (1 hour, one time).
- "NYS Mandated Reporter Training (2 hours)", provided by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services; "This training was updated on 11/1/22. To satisfy this requirement, the training certificate must be dated 11/1/22 or after" (https://oasas.ny.gov/one-time-requirements-casac-pdf). The engine does not check the 11/1/22 floor; see format_rules. (2 hours, one time).
- "Harm Reduction Is Part of the Treatment Continuum (1.5 hour)", a mandatory one-time requirement for applicants and renewing CASACs, offered through OASAS Learning Thursdays (https://oasas.ny.gov/one-time-requirements-casac-pdf). (1.5 hours, one time).
- "Monitoring for Suicide Risk in Treatment Settings (1 hour)", a mandatory one-time requirement for applicants and renewing CASACs, offered through OASAS Learning Thursdays (https://oasas.ny.gov/one-time-requirements-casac-pdf). (1 hour, one time).
Full board policy details
- Acceptable training: "Please note that OASAS cannot pre-approve trainings. Acceptable trainings must be obtained through a nationally recognized federal, state, or local organization, including ATTC's and PTTC's, examples of nationally recognized trade associations are NAADAC, SAMHSA, or NASW." Certificates must show "Accreditation through OASAS Education and Training Providers (ETP) or through a federal state or local government agency", the trainer's signature, the participant's name, and the typewritten hours and completion date; ETP trainings must be listed on the OASAS Training Catalog and issued on "the OASAS Standardized Certificate of Completion" (https://oasas.ny.gov/system/files/documents/2023/05/approved training.pdf). The engine does not check provider identity; a course logged here must meet this standard to count.
- The six renewal ethics hours must be "OASAS approved ethics training" (https://oasas.ny.gov/credentialing/renew-casac) and must include the one-hour OASAS Learning Thursdays course "Professional Boundaries and Reporting Requirements" (https://oasas.ny.gov/one-time-requirements-casac-pdf). Tag that course with both ethics and professional boundaries.
- One-time requirements: Person Centered Care (1 hour), Cannabis Use Disorder Diagnostic Criteria and Assessment (1), Opioid Overdose Prevention Basics (1), NYS Mandated Reporter Training (2), Harm Reduction Is Part of the Treatment Continuum (1.5) and Monitoring for Suicide Risk in Treatment Settings (1) are "mandatory one-time requirements that must be completed by applicants pursuing the CASAC and individuals renewing their CASAC credential"; they are free (https://oasas.ny.gov/one-time-requirements-casac-pdf). They "count toward the overall 60 hours" when completed in the period (https://oasas.ny.gov/renewal-application-instructions), and are exempt from the six-year retention period. A Mandated Reporter certificate dated before 11/1/22 does not satisfy the requirement. The list is set by OASAS under 853.11(b) and has changed over time; the applicant-only items (Supporting Recovery with MAT, Cultural Humility) are not owed on renewal.
- Gambling Specialty Designation: a CASAC holding the CASAC-G designation (14 NYCRR 853.9(a)) must also attest "an additional 10 hours of gambling-related education and/or training" (https://oasas.ny.gov/renewal-application-instructions). The designation has no license fact in the product yet, so the ten hours are not encoded; a CASAC-G should log them as well.
- Hours must fall inside the current credential period: "All education and training must be completed during your current credentialed period" (https://oasas.ny.gov/renewal-application-instructions; 14 NYCRR 853.11(b) "within the current credentialed period"). Because the completed renewal application must be received at least 75 days before expiration (853.11(a)), hours earned in the last 75 days before expiration cannot be attested on a timely renewal.
- Level upgrades at renewal: a CASAC may request the Advanced or Master level "when they renew or by submitting and completing an upgrade application"; the upgrade requires "Certificates of completion for 30 hours of approved Clinical Supervision Foundations training", and Clinical Supervision Foundations hours completed in the current period may be applied toward the upgrade (https://oasas.ny.gov/credentialing/renew-casac; https://oasas.ny.gov/renewal-application-instructions). The upgrade does not change the 60-hour renewal requirement.
- Dual credentialing: many CASACs also hold a New York Education Department license (LMHC, LCSW, LMFT, psychologist). Part 853 says nothing about sharing hours between the CASAC and an Education Department license and sets no reduced or combined total; the CASAC is evaluated on its own 60 hours. A licensed Qualified Health Professional may hold the CASAC - Master level by meeting the "required degree for licensed QHPs" plus the Clinical Supervision Foundations training (scopes-of-practice chart, 2/2024).
- Reciprocity: "Upon first renewal, all persons issued a credential based on reciprocity must submit documentation" of the training required by the Office, in addition to the 853.11 renewal requirements (14 NYCRR 853.12). The extra training is not itemized in the regulation and is not encoded.
- Active military service: continuing education requirements for a certification period spent on active duty are waived, and prorated when the service covers only part of the period; a credential that expires during active duty is extended for the length of the service plus 12 months after release (14 NYCRR 853.11(e)). Not encoded.
