Addiction counselor CE hours calculator

Enter your renewal date and the hours your state board requires, then enter the hours you have completed so far. You’ll see your gap by category, not just a running total, so an ethics shortfall never hides behind a healthy number.

Pick a state and we fill in the board minimums. Choose another state / not sure to enter them yourself.

Common questions

How many CE hours does an addiction counselor need?

It depends on the state and the credential: board rules range from 20 hours a year to 60 hours over three years, with 40 hours every two years the most common. Most boards also set an ethics minimum, and many require part of the total to be specific to substance use disorders. Enter your state's totals in the calculator, or look them up on the addiction counselor requirements by state page.

Does hitting my total number of hours mean I'm done?

Not necessarily. A required category such as ethics, or a substance-use-specific share, counts on its own. You can reach the total and still be short in one of them, which is a common reason a renewal is rejected. That's why this calculator tracks ethics separately from your overall total.

Do NAADAC-approved courses count in my state?

Often, but not everywhere. Many addiction boards accept NAADAC or IC&RC approval outright, while others keep their own approved-provider lists or require board pre-approval for part of the hours. The addiction counselor requirements by state page shows each board's provider rules.

My state doesn't license addiction counselors. Where are its rules?

Some states issue no addiction counselor license or certification of their own. Counselors there hold a private certification board's credential, and that board, not the state, sets the recertification hours. The requirements by state page lists the states with a state-issued credential.

I also hold an LPC or LCSW. Can I use this?

Run the calculator once per license. Each board sets its own hours, ethics and cycle, and most addiction boards do not reduce your total because you hold another license, even where the same course can count for both. certification.app tracks each license and its deadline separately once you save your record.
