Full board policy details
- Kansas does not pre-approve CE providers or courses for LMFTs/LCMFTs. Any reasonable source (courses, conferences, webinars) is acceptable as long as the content is oriented to the enhancement of marriage and family therapy practice, values, skills, and knowledge (K.A.R. 102-5-10). No percentage of hours must come from a board-approved sponsor.
- Interactive or assessed self-study (online modules with a post-test, telecourses with evaluation, live interactive webinars) is treated like live instruction and may count for the full 40 hours. Unsupervised self-study WITHOUT a post-test/assessment (reading articles, watching videos) is capped at 10 hours per renewal period. Cross-disciplinary courses (medicine, law, languages, etc.) and pre-approved self-directed learning projects are each capped at 10 hours. There is no per-day hour limit; short activities credit in 15-minute increments.
- COURSE REPEAT RESTRICTIONS — Approval shall not be granted for identical programs completed within the same renewal period; an attendee cannot count the exact same course twice in one cycle. Teaching credit for preparing and presenting an MFT course or workshop is granted only for the FIRST TIME that specific course is presented (max 10 hours); subsequent offerings of the same material earn no additional credit. First-time publication of an MFT article in a juried journal earns up to 10 hours; republishing or reusing content does not count again. A course may be retaken for credit in a subsequent renewal period.
- LICENSE STATUS RULES — Kansas has no formal inactive or retired license status for LMFTs/LCMFTs; a license is either active (renewed biennially with CE) or lapsed. No CE is required while a license is expired. Reinstatement of a license expired one year or less requires the renewal fee plus a penalty fee (equal to the renewal fee) and proof of 40 hours of CE completed in the 24 months preceding the application. For a license expired more than one year, the board may issue a one-time non-renewable 6-month reinstatement temporary license to allow the licensee to complete the required CE before full reinstatement. CE is not required during temporary or provisional licensure.
- Hardship extension — a licensee unable to complete required CE by the renewal deadline due to extenuating circumstances beyond their control may request up to a 3-month extension beyond expiration. The request must be submitted at least 30 days before expiration with an explanation and a completion plan. The license is renewed on time and remains valid during the extension; hours completed in the grace period count only toward the overdue cycle. The board will not grant an extension in two consecutive renewal cycles.
