- CATEGORY STRUCTURE: Indiana organizes CE into two named buckets. Category I continuing education courses = formally organized courses, workshops, seminars, symposia, postdoctoral institutes, and home study programs (approved computer/audio/video by board-approved organizations). Category II activities = journal clubs, colloquia, invited speaker sessions, in-house seminars, case conferences, programs at professional/scientific meetings, and individualized learning (approved audio/video, formal professional supervision, and preparation for teaching/creating materials). At least 20 of the 40 hours must be Category I; no more than 20 hours may be Category II.
- FORMAT CAPS: Category I home study is capped at 10 credit hours per license period. Category II individualized learning (approved audio/video, formal professional supervision, and preparation for teaching/creating materials) is capped at 10 credit hours per license period. Combined, up to ~30 hours may be obtained by home study/self-study. There is no explicit live/in-person minimum, but because at least 20 hours must be Category I and Category I home study is capped at 10, at least ~10 Category I hours effectively come from non-home-study organized programming.
- ACCEPTABILITY STANDARDS: All CE must be an approved continuing education course approved by a board-recognized organization; APA-sponsored CE is accepted (APA is pre-approved). Organizations/individuals or specific courses not on the pre-approved list may apply to the board for approval; a licensee may submit course materials to the board for approval. Courses in the business management of the practice of psychology (practice management) do NOT qualify. The time spent presenting a workshop or teaching a course does NOT qualify for CE (only preparation counts, as capped Category II individualized learning). Formal professional supervision counts only if board pre-approved and only for face-to-face individual supervision; administrative supervision never counts. All activities are credited one CE hour per clock hour (1:1); there are no non-1:1 conversions. There is no rule on drawing from a minimum number of distinct categories, only the Category I floor and Category II cap.
- COURSE REPEAT RESTRICTIONS: The rule contains no express prohibition on a licensee taking the same course twice in a cycle. Indiana does not grant CE for the act of teaching/presenting a course; only preparation for teaching/creating materials counts, and only as Category II individualized learning capped at 10 credit hours per license period. There is no separate per-repeat teaching limit beyond that 10-hour cap.
- LICENSE STATUS RULES: There is no inactive status for the Indiana psychology license. There is no exemption for retired psychologists or those practicing outside Indiana — retired/out-of-state HSPP holders still owe the full 40 hours. No hardship, illness, military, or disability CE waiver exists in the CE rule (868 IAC 1.1-15) or IC 25-33-2 (active-duty military renewal relief is governed separately by IC 25-1-12, not this CE rule). REACTIVATION: if a license has been expired less than 3 years, it may be renewed by paying the renewal fee (the biennial CE still applies for the period). If invalidated for 3 or more years (reinstatement), the licensee must submit proof of 20 clock hours of CE for each year or partial year of delinquency counted from the date of invalidation, relevant to the psychologist's area of practice and excluding practice-management courses. This makeup amount scales with the number of years delinquent and draws on historical windows, so it cannot be represented as a fixed conditional requirement — MANUAL REVIEW required.
- NOT ENFORCEABLE BY THE CURRENT SCHEMA: Live-interactive online classification is ambiguous. The rule predates modern synchronous webinars and does not expressly classify live-interactive online CE; whether a synchronous APA-sponsor webinar is an organized Category I course (no 10-hour cap) or capped home study is undefined — verify with the board.
- OVERLAYS (informational, not part of Indiana board CE): PSYPACT E.Passport/IPC authorizations renew annually with their own CE administered by the PSYPACT Commission (E.Passport renewal requires 3 hours of CE directly related to telepsychology and use of technology); this does NOT count toward or against the Indiana 40-hour requirement. Indiana does not grant general prescriptive authority to psychologists (except within specific federal training/treatment programs), so there is no separate prescriptive-authority CE obligation.
- LICENSE SCOPE: This product rule covers the full independent Indiana psychologist credential when the HSPP endorsement creates the 40-hour obligation. A bare Licensed Psychologist without HSPP, limited-license holders, and temporary/nonrenewable permits are distinct credential states outside this product rule; they are not encoded as CE-exempt aliases of the independent psychologist credential.
