Cycle and record rules
- Renewal
- The renewal cycle is biennial, and CE is due by October 31 of odd years.
- Renewal fee
- The board renewal fee is $10 every 2 years.
- New licensees
- Prescriptive authority granted less than twelve months before its first October 31 expiration renews with no continuing education (IC 25-23-1-19.7(a)(1)); the PLA: "If you were initially granted prescriptive authority for less than twelve (12) months before the expiration date of the prescriptive authority, no continuing education is required."
- Approved providers
- Hours must "be approved by a nationally approved sponsor of continuing education for nurses, be approved by the board, and be listed by the Indiana professional licensing agency as approved hours" (IC 25-23-1-19.7(b)(3)); the PLA lists the accepted sponsors as the United States Department of Education, the Council on Post-Secondary Education, the Joint Commission, federal, state and local government agencies, accredited colleges, "A national organization of licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurses", affiliated national, state, district or local organizations, and approved hospital internships or residencies. Continuing education is "an orderly process of instruction ... approved by ... an approved organization or the board ... and ... designed to directly enhance the practitioner's knowledge and skill" (IC 25-1-4-0.5). Hours count only when "completed within the two (2) years immediately preceding the renewal", November 1 of the odd year before renewal through October 31 of the renewal year. The Board publishes no carry-over or repeat-course rule.
- Recordkeeping
- Keep CE documentation for 3 years after each renewal.
- Board audit
- The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
- Late renewal
- A late renewal adds a late fee.
To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.
Every credential an Indiana PMHNP renews
Each one renews on its own date, and a lapse at any of them stops prescribing. The ANCC certification and DEA registration are the same in every state.

Full board policy details
- National certification: "An applicant for renewal of prescriptive authority under this section must maintain national certification or certification equivalence, as required by section 19.5(d) of this chapter" (IC 25-23-1-19.7(c)), so the pmhnp bc row must be current to renew. The statute requires the 30 hours in addition, and the renewal attestation is a sworn statement of hours completed (IC 25-1-4-3(a)(1)), so maintaining certification does NOT lift the 30 here. The PLA's APRN audit instructions nevertheless say "In lieu of the (30) contact hours, you may submit proof of your National Certification", a board practice that accepts current certification as audit evidence. A PMHNP-BC's ANCC hours satisfy both layers when logged inside the window, so the conservative modeling costs a certificant nothing extra in practice.
- Who holds this row: the APRN Prescriptive Authority license is the only APRN credential Indiana issues; nurse practitioners "who do not need prescriptive authority should practice under their Indiana Registered Nurse license" (PLA). Initial authority requires a graduate pharmacology course of at least two semester hours (IC 25-23-1-19.5(d)(2)(B)(ii); 848 IAC 5-1-1(a)(6)), or, when that course is more than five years old, 30 contact hours with 8 of pharmacology in the two years before applying plus prescriptive experience (848 IAC 5-1-1(a)(6)(B)); a baccalaureate-only applicant must show national certification (848 IAC 5-1-1(a)(5)). These are application conditions, not renewal CE.
- Collaborative practice agreement: renewal also requires "A current signed and dated written collaborative practice agreement that contains all of the information required under section 1 of this rule" (848 IAC 5-1-3(e)(2); IC 25-23-1-19.4). "If there is no current collaborative agreement with an Indiana licensed practitioner at the time of your renewal, your license will be renewed under 'Current/Not Practicing' status, provided that you meet all the other requirements", and "APRNs may not practice their prescriptive authority while their APRN is not Active" (PLA). The agreement is a document on file, not continuing education, and is not modeled; the Board audits agreements every two years under IC 25-23-1-19.8.
- No prescriber-only or opioid hours remain in Indiana: the two hours of opioid prescribing and opioid abuse education that IC 35-48-3-3.5 attached to the Controlled Substance Registration expired July 1, 2025 (in-csr.yaml), and 848 IAC 5-4 (Opioid Prescribing Requirements) sets "standards and protocols for advanced practice nurses with prescriptive authority in the prescribing of opioid controlled substances for pain management treatment" (5-4-1), practice standards with no CE. The federal MATE Act training belongs to the DEA row (us-dea.yaml). Holding a DEA registration or prescribing opioids therefore changes nothing on this row, and no gate on `dea` or `prescribes opioids` is modeled.
- APRN - Compact RN variant: an APRN whose multistate RN license is from another compact state holds the "APRN - Compact RN" license, which grants the same prescriptive authority and has "the same CE and collaborative agreement requirements as the single-state APRN license" but "will have the same expiration date as your current Compact RN License from your home state" (PLA), not October 31. This rule's calendar fits the Indiana-RN-based license; a Compact-RN-based APRN renews the same 30 hours on the home-state date, which this file does not model.
- Hardship waiver (IC 25-1-4-4): the Board "may grant an applicant a waiver from all or part of the continuing education requirement for a renewal period" for military service during a substantial part of the period, an incapacitating illness or injury, or other circumstances the Board determines. Granted case by case; not modeled.
- Reinstatement after three or more years requires "a signed Collaborative Practice Agreement with an Indiana Licensed Practitioner" and "at least thirty (30) hours contact hours of continuing education ... completed recently within the immediate preceding twenty-four (24) months from the received date of your Application", including eight of pharmacology (PLA, Reinstate Prescriptive Authority license for APRN). Authority expired less than three years is renewed online with the late fee and the same 30 hours.
- Compacts: Indiana is a Nurse Licensure Compact state (IC 25-42, HEA 1344-2019, implemented July 1, 2020), which concerns the RN layer (in-rn.yaml). Indiana has not enacted the APRN Compact, which has not taken effect anywhere; prescriptive authority is single-state.
