South Dakota PMHNP Continuing Education Requirements

Here's what a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) must complete to renew in South Dakota.

These are the South Dakota APRN license requirements for a board-certified PMHNP who prescribes controlled substances. Your RN license, ANCC certification and DEA registration renew separately; see every credential.

The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.

Registered nurse renewal$115. "For the biennial renewal of a license, ninety-five dollars, plus ten dollars to fund the nurses' education assistance scholarship program, pursuant to SDCL 36-9-77, and ten dollars to fund the nursing workforce center, pursuant to SDCL 36-9-95" (ARSD 20:48:06:01(6), as amended effective August 3, 2026).
Certified nurse practitioner renewal$95. Biennial CNP license renewal (ARSD 20:62:01:11(3)).

The figure recorded above is the CNP renewal, "For biennial renewal of a license, $95" (ARSD 20:62:01:11(3)), charged in addition to the RN renewal; a CNP who holds a South Dakota RN license pays both.

Approved providers
The South Dakota Board of Nursing sets no continuing education for RN or CNP license renewal (its continuing education chapter, ARSD 20:48:12, is repealed), so it keeps no approved-provider list and accepts no hours. The only education a South Dakota PMHNP owes is the national certification's (ANCC's 75 contact hours, us-pmhnp_bc.yaml) and, with a DEA registration, the federal MATE Act training (us-dea.yaml). Hours logged against these rows are held for those credentials.
Recordkeeping
Keep CE documentation for 6 years after each renewal.
Late renewal
A late renewal adds a late fee.

To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.

Full board policy details
  • RN renewal has no hours. "A notice for renewal of license shall be sent by the board to the last known address of each current licensee. Within the time provided in the notice, the fee prescribed by chapter 20:48:06 shall be filed with the board together with evidence of employment status according to provisions of SDCL 36-9-1 and 36-9-45" (ARSD 20:48:03:09); the statute asks only that "The licensee shall submit the required fee to the board before the expiration date. Upon receipt of the fee, the board shall renew the license" (SDCL 36-9-45). Article 20:48 lists chapter 20:48:12, "Continuing education, Repealed", and no other chapter of the article or of SDCL chapter 36-9 names continuing education or contact hours as a condition of renewal.
  • Practice hours, not CE, are the RN competency check. "Registered nurses and licensed practical nurses must be employed in nursing for a minimum of 140 hours in any 12-month period over the preceding 6 years to be eligible for active status licensure. Applicants for licensure who have not been employed in nursing for a minimum of 140 hours in any 12-month period over the 6 years immediately preceding endorsement, renewal, reactivation, or reinstatement must submit evidence of compliance with reentry standards. Compliance with reentry standards may be accomplished by employment in nursing of at least 480 hours accumulated during the preceding 6 years or by successful completion of a nursing refresher course approved by the board" (ARSD 20:48:03:16), a course of "a minimum of 160 course hours" with "at least 80 hours of theory and 80 hours of supervised clinical experience" (20:48:03:17). The statute lets the Board set reentry standards "if any applicant for renewal of a license has not engaged in the practice of nursing in the past six years" (SDCL 36-9-45). Employment hours are an attestation verified by the employer, not continuing education, and are not modeled; a practicing PMHNP meets them through NP practice.
  • CNP renewal rides on national certification, not hours. "Licensure as a nurse practitioner or nurse midwife must be renewed biennially according to the expiration dates provided in § 20:62:02:05. The licensee shall complete the application for renewal as provided by the boards, including: (1) Evidence of holding an unencumbered South Dakota registered nurse license or privilege to practice; (2) Evidence of current certification as set forth in subdivision 20:62:02:02(3); (3) An affidavit that the licensee has committed no act of misconduct as set forth by SDCL 36-9A-29; and (4) The fees required by subdivision 20:62:01:11(3)" (ARSD 20:62:02:06), the certification being "a nationally recognized certification examination approved by the board which is specific to the applicant's advanced practice registered nurse role and educational preparation, and maintains current certification" (20:62:02:02(3)). "If the license holder meets the requirements established by the board in rules ... and pays the required fee, the board shall renew the license" (SDCL 36-9A-23). National certification substitutes for nothing here because there are no state hours; it is the condition of the license, and its CE is ANCC's (us-pmhnp bc.yaml). "Any person licensed pursuant to SDCL 36-9A-4 before June 26, 1996, is exempt from subdivision (2)" (20:62:02:06); that legacy uncertified population owes nothing either and needs no separate modeling.
  • CNP expiration date: the CNP license expires with the South Dakota RN license (ARSD 20:62:02:05(1)), so both rows normally share one birth date. A CNP whose RN license is a multistate license from another Nurse Licensure Compact state holds no South Dakota RN row, and the CNP license then expires "on the licensee's second birthday after the date of issuance" (20:62:02:05(2)) and biennially after that, which is the same anniversary cycle dated from the CNP row's own expiration. The engine does not tie the CNP date to ANCC's: if the national certification lapses, the CNP cannot meet 20:62:02:06(2) at the next renewal, and practice without it is grounds for discipline (SDCL 36-9A-29).
  • New-licensee collaboration is a practice condition, not CE. An applicant must show "Verification of having completed one thousand forty practice hours as a licensed nurse practitioner or nurse midwife in the preceding five years; or submission of a collaborative agreement with a nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, or physician licensed in South Dakota for the applicant's first one thousand forty hours of practice ... Upon meeting the required one thousand forty hours of licensed practice, a licensee may submit evidence to the Board of Nursing to request inactivation of the agreement" (ARSD 20:62:02:02(7); SDCL 36-9A-1(8)). The collaborator "shall hold an unencumbered license to practice and have a minimum of two years of licensed practice in a comparable area of practice". Once the 1,040 hours are met a South Dakota CNP practices independently; the agreement has no renewal or education component and is not modeled.
  • Prescribing carries no state CE. A CNP may "Prescribe, procure, administer, and furnish pharmacological agents, including over the counter, legend, and controlled drugs or substances listed on Schedule II in chapter 34-20B" (SDCL 36-9A-12(4)(b)), with no separate prescriptive-authority credential from the Board. "Prior to prescribing any controlled substances listed in SDCL chapter 34-20B, a nurse practitioner or nurse midwife, that meets state and federal controlled substance registration requirements, shall register with the state's prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) and meet requirements in SDCL chapter 34-20E", and chronic non-cancer pain prescribing carries documentation standards (ARSD 20:62:03:11). The PDMP is the Board of Pharmacy's database (SDCL 34-20E-2), a registration and query duty, not education. South Dakota attaches no opioid, pain management, controlled-substance or pharmacology hours to the nursing license, the CNP license or the state registration, so nothing is gated on the `prescribing` fact or a `dea` row here. The state registration is sd-csr.yaml and the federal MATE Act training is us-dea.yaml.
  • No statewide mandates: South Dakota has no implicit bias, human trafficking, suicide prevention, cultural competency, infection control, domestic violence or ethics CE for nurses or nurse practitioners in SDCL chapters 36-9 and 36-9A or ARSD articles 20:48 and 20:62.
  • Inactive status and reinstatement. A licensee may request inactive status on the fee (SDCL 36-9-46; 36-9A-25). The Board may reactivate an RN license if the licensee applies, "Pays the applicable renewal fee for the current biennial period", "Has met the eligibility or reentry standards in § 20:48:03:16" and any applicable renewal requirements (ARSD 20:48:03:11, as amended effective August 3, 2026). A lapsed RN license "may be reinstated by filing a satisfactory explanation for such failure to renew, payment of the required fee, and by filing evidence of employment status during the preceding six years"; after six or more years, under the reentry rules of SDCL 36-9-47.1 (20:48:03:12). A CNP reactivates or reinstates on current national certification, an unencumbered RN license or privilege, the misconduct affidavit and the fee (ARSD 20:62:02:07, 20:62:02:09). No education is owed on return, so no reactivation block is modeled.
  • Compacts: South Dakota is a Nurse Licensure Compact state (SDCL 36-9-98 enacts the compact), so a South Dakota-resident RN holds a multistate RN license renewed on this birth-date cycle, and a CNP may hold the CNP license on "privilege to practice" from another compact state's multistate license (ARSD 20:62:02:02(5), 20:62:02:06(1)). South Dakota enacted the APRN Compact in February 2024 (NCSBN news release, February 9, 2024), but the compact is not operational until seven states enact it, so every South Dakota CNP license is a single-state license.
