Arizona PMHNP Continuing Education Requirements
Here's what a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) must complete to renew in Arizona.
These are the Arizona APRN license requirements for a board-certified PMHNP who prescribes controlled substances. Your RN license, ANCC certification and DEA registration renew separately; see every credential.
The renewal cycle is every 4 years and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.

Cycle and record rules
- Renewal
- The renewal cycle is every 4 years and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.
- Approved providers
- Arizona sets no general continuing education for RN or RNP renewal, so there is no approved-provider list; the Board's renewal page states that RNs and LPNs "do not have a continuing education requirement to renew" an active license. The three opioid, substance use disorder or addiction hours for DEA registrants must be accredited continuing education (A.R.S. § 32-3248.02) earned within the four-year cycle. The 45-plus-45-hour alternative for an RNP short of practice hours is advanced pharmacology and role-and-population content from recognized providers.
- Recordkeeping
- Keep CE documentation for 5 years after each renewal.
- Board audit
- The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
- Late renewal
- A late renewal adds a late fee.
To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.
Every credential an Arizona PMHNP renews
Each one renews on its own date, and a lapse at any of them stops prescribing. The ANCC certification and DEA registration are the same in every state.

Full board policy details
- RN renewal is a practice requirement: the applicant shows that they "Practiced nursing at the applicable level of licensure for a minimum of 960 hours in the five years before the date on which the application is received", or "Completed a post-licensure nursing education program" in that time, or completed "a Board-approved refresher or competency program" (A.A.C. R4-19-312; renewal form content in R4-19-305). No contact hours are required, so no total is modeled.
- RNP certificate renewal: the certificant verifies "960 hours within the past five years" of advanced practice nursing and "provide[s] evidence of current national certification or recertification"; a certificant without the hours must instead complete "45 contact hours of advanced pharmacology and 45 contact hours in a subject or subjects related to the role and population focus of certification" plus precepted clinical practice (A.A.C. R4-19-506). The 90-hour alternative is a return-to-practice path, not a renewal requirement, so it is left in prose; the national certification's own CE is ANCC's (us-pmhnp bc.yaml). The RNP certificate "expires when the certificate holder's RN license expires, or when national certification expires, whichever occurs first."
- Opioid, substance use disorder or addiction hours: owed only by a prescriber "who holds a valid United States drug enforcement administration registration number" (A.R.S. § 32-3248.02), so the requirement is gated on holding a DEA row at the APRN layer and is not shown to an RNP without one. The eight-hour federal MATE Act training lives in the DEA rule; it is not an Arizona requirement.
