Florida PMHNP Continuing Education Requirements
Here's what a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) must complete to renew in Florida.
These are the Florida APRN license requirements for a board-certified PMHNP who prescribes controlled substances. Your RN license, ANCC certification and DEA registration renew separately; see every credential.
The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.

Florida PMHNP requirements
Total
Florida sets no APRN hour total that applies to every board-certified PMHNP. The topic minimums below still apply. Your ANCC certification renewal sets its own hours, listed with your other credentials. The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.

Cycle and record rules
- Renewal
- The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.
- Renewal fee
- The board renewal fee is $75 every 2 years.
- New licensees
- Nurses licensed by examination during a biennium are exempt from the general continuing education hours for that first biennium (Rule 64B9-5.002(3), F.A.C.), but the Board of Nursing still requires the mandatory courses at the first renewal: 2 hours prevention of medical errors, 2 hours Florida laws and rules, 2 hours recognizing impairment in the workplace, 2 hours human trafficking and the one-time 1-hour HIV/AIDS course, plus the 3-hour controlled-substance course for APRNs.
- Approved providers
- Hours are earned from providers approved by the Board of Nursing or by another approving body the board recognizes, and are reported by the provider or the licensee to CE Broker, the Department of Health's tracking system; the board checks CE Broker at renewal rather than collecting certificates. Each hour counts only in the biennium it was earned. The 3-hour controlled-substance course has its own provider list in s. 464.013(3)(b), F.S.
- Recordkeeping
- Keep CE documentation for 4 years after each renewal.
- Board audit
- The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
- Late renewal
- A late renewal adds a late fee.
To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.

Full board policy details
- Dual RN and APRN licensees: "A registered nurse who also holds a current APRN license may satisfy the continuing education requirement for both licenses by completing appropriate continuing education for a registered nurse, or may satisfy up to 50% of the continuing education requirement by completing continuing medical education coursework equivalent to the contact hours required by these rules" (Rule 64B9-5.002(4), F.A.C.). Both layers are rows under one profession here, so one logged course is checked against both; the board asks that it be reported under both license numbers in CE Broker.
- Specialty certification exemption: "A nurse who is certified by a health care specialty program accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification is exempt from continuing education requirements" (s. 464.013(3)(a), F.S.). The board's FAQ: "This exemption includes general and mandatory nursing continuing education with the exception of Human Trafficking and Safe and Effective Prescription of Controlled Substances", and the exemption "must be reported" in CE Broker. ANCC certifications, including PMHNP-BC, are ABSNC-accredited, so every requirement except human trafficking and the APRN controlled-substance course is gated on not holding `pmhnp bc`; a certificant who logs CE anyway sees it counted against nothing but those two.
- Military spouses: "A nurse who is the spouse of a member of the Armed Forces and was caused to be absent from Florida due to the spouse's duties with the Armed Forces shall be exempt from continuing education requirements" on proof of the absence and the spouse's status (Rule 64B9-5.002(5)). Not modeled; the licensee reports the exemption to the board.
- Partial-biennium licensees: the rule's "one contact hour must be earned for each calendar month of the licensure cycle" wording means a license issued by endorsement, reactivated or reinstated mid-biennium owes one hour per remaining month, and none when six months or less remain (Rule 64B9-5.002(3)). The board's APRN renewal page states the same: "If your Florida license was not issued for the full two year biennium you must complete 1 hour of CE for each month that you hold the license."

Is the first renewal different for new Florida PMHNP licensees?
Nurses licensed by examination during a biennium are exempt from the general continuing education hours for that first biennium (Rule 64B9-5.002(3), F.A.C.), but the Board of Nursing still requires the mandatory courses at the first renewal: 2 hours prevention of medical errors, 2 hours Florida laws and rules, 2 hours recognizing impairment in the workplace, 2 hours human trafficking and the one-time 1-hour HIV/AIDS course, plus the 3-hour controlled-substance course for APRNs.
