North Carolina PMHNP Continuing Education Requirements
North Carolina psychiatric nurse practitioners must complete 50 continuing education hours every 2 years to renew their APRN license.
These are the North Carolina APRN license requirements for a board-certified PMHNP who prescribes controlled substances. Your RN license, ANCC certification and DEA registration renew separately; see every credential.
The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.

Cycle and record rules
- Renewal
- The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.
- Approved providers
- The 20 population-focus hours must be approved by ANCC, ACCME, a national accredited provider of nursing continuing professional development, or be NP-relevant coursework at an institution of higher learning; the other 30 may be any continuing education activity relevant to NP practice. Hours must fall within the two years before the renewal they support. The Board does not keep a provider list for the NP layer, so no provider gate is enforced; keep the certificates.
- Recordkeeping
- Keep CE documentation for 5 years after each course's completion date.
- Board audit
- The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
- Late renewal
- A late renewal adds a late fee.
To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.
Every credential a North Carolina PMHNP renews
Each one renews on its own date, and a lapse at any of them stops prescribing. The ANCC certification and DEA registration are the same in every state.

Full board policy details
- Annual renewal, biennial hours: "Each registered nurse who is approved to practice as a nurse practitioner in this State shall annually renew each approval to practice with the Board no later than the last day of the nurse practitioner's birth month" (21 NCAC 36 .0806), "Maintaining current North Carolina RN licensure or privilege to practice" and "Maintaining certification as a nurse practitioner by a national credentialing body". The 50 hours are owed "every two years, beginning with the first renewal" (36 .0807). The engine's two-year window ends at each annual expiration, so the dashboard asks for the 50 at every renewal; the Board checks them at every second one.
- National certification: current certification is a condition of approval and of every renewal (36 .0806), and it is deemed to satisfy the 20 population-focus hours (36 .0807) but not the 50-hour total. The certification's own CE is ANCC's (us-pmhnp bc.yaml).
- Controlled-substance hour: one hour in the 12 months before prescribing controlled substances, every year, on the listed topics; MATE Act training is deemed compliance for the two-year period in which it was completed (36 .0807). Gated on holding a DEA row because that is what makes a nurse practitioner a controlled-substance prescriber.
