New York PMHNP requirements
Total
New York sets no APRN hour total that applies to every board-certified PMHNP. Your ANCC certification renewal sets its own hours, listed with your other credentials. The renewal cycle is triennial, and your license renews at the end of your birth month.
Cycle and record rules
- Renewal
- The renewal cycle is triennial, and your license renews at the end of your birth month.
- Approved providers
- New York sets no general continuing education hours for RN or nurse practitioner registration. The three mandated trainings each have their own approved-provider list: infection control from a NYSED- or DOH- approved provider, child abuse identification from a NYSED-approved provider, and the prescriber course from any provider whose program covers the eight topics named in Public Health Law § 3309-a(3). The prescriber hours are checked against the three years ending at the registration date.
- Recordkeeping
- Keep CE documentation for 6 years after each renewal.
- Board audit
- The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.
Every credential a New York PMHNP renews
Each one renews on its own date, and a lapse at any of them stops prescribing. The ANCC certification and DEA registration are the same in every state.

New York PMHNP required trainings and mandates
New York also requires specific trainings. Some are due once around initial licensure, and others run on their own recurring schedule.
One-time requirements
- "Before the New York State Education Department (NYSED) can issue you an RN license or limited permit, you must complete child abuse reporting coursework approved by NYSED or qualify for an exemption" (NYSED RN FAQ Q17): "two hours of coursework or training regarding the identification and reporting of child abuse and maltreatment ... This is a one-time requirement and once taken does not need to be completed again" (NYSED, Mandated Training Related to Child Abuse). Required of registered nurses and nurse practitioners "when applying initially for licensure or a limited permit"; a licensee whose practice has no contact with persons under 18 may apply for an exemption. Because it is completed before licensure, the license form asks whether it was submitted with the application and waives it on a yes. (2 hours, one time).
Recurring mandates outside the 3-year cycle
- "Every dentist, registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, podiatrist, optometrist, athletic trainer, and dental hygienist" must complete course work "on or before July first, nineteen hundred ninety-four and every four years thereafter" in "infection control, which shall include sepsis, and barrier precautions, including engineering and work practice controls" to prevent transmission of HIV, HBV, HCV and infections that could lead to sepsis (Education Law § 6505-b; NYSED RN FAQ Q16: "you must complete NYSED approved infection control coursework every four years or qualify for an exemption"). The provider must be approved by the State Education Department or the Department of Health and cover the seven jointly approved core elements; no minimum hour count is set. Attested on the first registration and every registration thereafter; keep the certificate of completion. A nurse practitioner meets it through the RN license, so one completion covers both rows. Exemptions: a practice whose nature creates no need for the training, or comparable course work within the past four years.
- You need 3 hours of pain management every 3 years.
Full board policy details
- No general CE: registration of the RN license and of the NP certificate requires the registration fee and the attestations above, not a count of contact hours. Bills to add a 45-hour triennial requirement have been introduced in several sessions and have not been enacted; their figures must not be enforced.
- Two registrations, one person: the NP certificate "will authorize you to practice as a NP for 3 years" and "You must renew your NP registration and your RN registration with NYSED in order to continue practicing as a nurse practitioner. You are not legally allowed to provide nurse practitioner services while your NP or your RN registration is expired" (NYSED). The RN registration and the NP registration may carry different expiration dates; each row is dated from its own registration.
- Mandatory prescriber education is a Department of Health requirement attested on the DOH form, not reported to NYSED; the Department of Health's guidance and FAQ hold the exemption procedure and the list of acceptable formats. It is owed by every DEA-registered prescriber, including nurse practitioners, so the requirement is gated on the DEA row rather than on the NP certificate itself.
