Oklahoma PMHNP Continuing Education Requirements
Here's what a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) must complete to renew in Oklahoma.
These are the Oklahoma APRN license requirements for a board-certified PMHNP who prescribes controlled substances. Your RN license, ANCC certification and DEA registration renew separately; see every credential.
The renewal cycle is biennial, and your license renews at the end of your birth month.

Cycle and record rules
- Renewal
- The renewal cycle is biennial, and your license renews at the end of your birth month.
- Renewal fee
- The board renewal fee is $75 every 2 years.
- Approved providers
- RN continuing qualifications: contact hours must be "obtained through an accredited approver of continuing education or an approved nursing education program in the State of Oklahoma" and "applicable to nursing practice"; "one (1) contact hour is defined as 50 minutes" and one academic semester credit hour is 15 contact hours (OAC 485:10-1-2; Board guideline P-23). Prescriptive authority hours must come from "a program beyond basic registered nurse preparation, approved by the Board", through "a recognized approver of continuing education" (485:10-16-1, 485:10-16-6(2)(B)), with online and journal hours (Category C) accepted up to the full 15 at renewal and publication or presenting (Categories D and E) capped at 3 hours each. Everything is counted "within the past two years prior to the expiration date of the license" (485:10-7-3(d)) or "within the two-year period immediately preceding the effective date of application for renewal" (485:10-16-6(2)(B)); nothing carries over.
- Recordkeeping
- Keep CE documentation for 2 years after each renewal.
- Board audit
- The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
- Late renewal
- A late renewal adds a late fee.
To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.
Every credential an Oklahoma PMHNP renews

Full board policy details
- Continuing qualifications for practice (RN and APRN licenses): "each licensee shall demonstrate evidence of continuing qualifications for practice through completion of one or more of the following requirements within the past two years prior to the expiration date of the license: (1) Verify employment in a position that requires a nursing license at the highest level of licensure with verification of at least 520 work hours; or (2) Verify the completion of at least twenty-four (24) contact hours of continuing education applicable to nursing practice; or (3) Verify current certification in a nursing specialty area; or (4) Verify completion of a Board-approved refresher course; or (5) Verify completion of at least six (6) academic semester credit hours of nursing coursework at the licensee's current level of licensure or higher" (OAC 485:10-7-3(d)). "The options for continuing qualifications may not be combined in the same two year period to meet requirements (e.g., a licensee may not submit verification of 260 employment hours and twelve (12) contact hours as proof of eligibility)" and "Volunteer hours cannot be used" (Board guideline P-23, revised July 18, 2023). Because 24 hours is one optional item, and every employed nurse practitioner meets item (1) while every PMHNP-BC meets item (3) ("The nursing certification must be issued by an accredited nursing certification program", P-23), no total is enforced on either row; the menu is this prose. A nurse who relies on the 24 hours logs them here and the audit packet shows them.
- APRN license renewal: "Advanced Practice Registered Nurse renewal shall: (1) be concurrent with the two-year licensure renewal for Registered Nurse. (2) include a statement that the nurse's national certification is current and that certification will be maintained during the period of licensure renewal. (3) include submission of a copy of a current national certification document to the Board with the renewal form, if requested" (OAC 485:10-15-5(a)). National certification is a condition of the APRN license, not a substitute for any hours, so nothing here is gated on `pmhnp bc`; the certification's own 75-hour cycle is us-pmhnp bc.yaml. An APRN licensed on an out-of-state multistate RN license renews the Oklahoma APRN license on the same even-year birth-month date (Board, "Oklahoma APRN-only license", form RS-07b).
- Independent prescriptive authority (HB 2298, 59 O.S. 567.4c, effective November 1, 2025): an APRN-CNP, CNS or CNM with "a minimum of six thousand two hundred forty (6,240) clinical practice hours with prescriptive authority supervised by a physician" (OAC 485:10-16-3.2) may be recognized to prescribe without a supervising physician. At renewal such an APRN owes, in place of the 15 pharmacotherapeutics hours, "documentation approved by the Board verifying a minimum of forty (40) hours of Category I continuing medical education hours within the two-year period immediately preceding the effective date of application for renewal of independent prescriptive authority. This may include the continuing education described in 485:10-16-6(2)(B) if it meets the criteria for Category I continuing medical education" (485:10-16-6(2)(C)); the Board's form adds "not specific to any subject or topic of study" and that ACCME- or AAFP-accredited providers award Category I credit (form RS-24). The two pain management / opioid hours still apply. The corpus has no licensee fact for independent versus supervised prescriptive authority, so this variant is documented here and the supervised 15 hours are modeled; see notes for the suggested fact. "Independent Prescriptive Authority granted by the Board expires when the current APRN license to practice expires and must be renewed at the same time" (Board HB 2298 FAQ, November 4, 2025).
- Initial prescriptive authority is an application-time showing, not a renewal requirement: "45 contact hours of Category B continuing education or three academic credit hours of education (Category A) within the last three years immediately preceding the date of receipt of the application ... in a course or courses in pharmacotherapeutic management" (OAC 485:10-16-3; Board forms RS-07 and RS-07b), waivable for a graduate of the last three years whose program "incorporated" prescribing preparation. Supervised prescriptive authority also needs "a written statement from an Oklahoma-licensed physician supervising prescriptive authority" (485:10-16-3(3)), re-filed at each renewal unless filed within 90 days of expiration (485:10-16-6(2)(E)), and changes of supervising physician are filed "within thirty (30) days of the change" (485:10-16-5(b)). Prescriptive authority "is specific to the advanced practice role ... and the specialty certification"; an APRN with more than one must hold separate recognition for each (form RS-07b). None of this is modeled.
- Controlled substances: "The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with prescriptive authority who prescribes Schedule III-V drugs will comply with state and Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) requirements prior to prescribing controlled substances. No more than a 30-day supply for Schedule III-V drugs shall be prescribed" (OAC 485:10-16-5(c)); the Board's instructions name both registrations: "If either the OBNDD or the DEA registration lapses or is otherwise in an inactive status, the APRN must cease prescribing Schedule III-V drugs" and "Even after receiving DEA and OBNDD registration, the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse may not prescribe Schedule I or II drugs" (form RS-07b). The OBNDD registration is the `csr` row (ok-csr.yaml); the DEA registration is us-dea.yaml. The Board's opioid discussion guideline for the first opioid prescription (63 O.S. 2-309I) is a prescribing duty, not CE, and is not modeled. Oklahoma's "one (1) hour of education in pain management or one (1) hour of education in opioid use or addiction each year" belongs to the State Board of Medical Licensure (59 O.S. 495a.1, SB 1446 of 2018) and does not bind nurses; the nursing equivalent is the two hours above.
- Lapse, reinstatement and inactive status: "The Registered Nurse or Practical Nurse license is lapsed if not renewed by expiration date thereof" (OAC 485:10-7-4(a)); an APRN who "fails to renew licensure prior to the expiration date of that license, the advanced practice license shall lapse" (485:10-15-5(b)(1)); and prescriptive authority not renewed "shall expire and the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse shall cease prescribing" (485:10-16-7(a)(1)). Reinstatement of an RN license inactive for under five years uses the same five-item menu measured over the five years before the application (485:10-7-4(g)); five years or more requires a refresher course, the NCLEX, six academic hours or 520 out-of-state practice hours (485:10-7-4(h)). An APRN license lapsed two years or more needs an APRN refresher course, six graduate APRN credit hours or 520 out-of-state APRN hours plus current national certification, and "If the reinstatement is not approved within two (2) years of the expiration date of licensure, the applicant must meet current requirements for initial advanced practice licensure" (485:10-15-5(b)). Inactive status is available on written request without the renewal fee (485:10-7-5; 485:10-15-5(c)). Not modeled.
- Nurse Licensure Compact: Oklahoma implemented the enhanced NLC on January 19, 2018 and "started issuing multistate licenses to applicants/nurses that applied for a multistate license, met the uniform licensure requirements, and declared Oklahoma as their primary state of residence" (Board NLC page; OAC 485:10-7-10). A multistate RN license renews on the same Oklahoma schedule; the APRN Compact is not in effect. Not modeled.
