Wisconsin PMHNP Continuing Education Requirements

Wisconsin psychiatric nurse practitioners must complete 16 continuing education hours every 2 years to renew their APRN license, including 16 hours of clinical pharmacology or therapeutics relevant to the aprn's area of practice and 2 hours of responsible prescribing of controlled substances (within the 16 pharmacology hours).

These are the Wisconsin APRN license requirements for a board-certified PMHNP who prescribes controlled substances. Your RN license, ANCC certification and DEA registration renew separately; see every credential.

Cycle and record rules

Renewal
The renewal cycle is biennial, and CE is due by February 28 of even years.
Renewal fee
The board renewal fee is $110 every 2 years, and a late (delinquent) renewal adds a $25 fee.
Approved providers
Wis. Admin. Code ch. N 8 names no approved-provider list; the hours must be clinical pharmacology or therapeutics "relevant to the advanced practice registered nurse's area of practice" (N 8.05(1)), and the licensee keeps "certificates of attendance issued by the program sponsor" (N 8.05(3)). One contact hour is at least 50 minutes of attendance (N 8.02(6m)). Hours count in the biennium ending at the February even-year renewal; nothing carries over.
Recordkeeping
Keep CE documentation for 4 years after each course's completion date.
Board audit
The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
Late renewal
A late renewal adds a $25 late fee.

To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.

Full board policy details
  • National certification does not substitute for the 16 hours. Current certification "by a national certifying body approved by the board" in the recognized role is a condition of licensure (N 8.03(1)(e)) and of every renewal (N 8.045(4)); DSPS lists ANCC, AANPCB, AACN, PNCB, NCC and NBCRNA as approved bodies by role. Neither N 8.045 nor N 8.05 offers a certification alternative to the hours, so holding `pmhnp bc` changes nothing here, and no gate on it is modeled. The certification's own renewal is the ANCC row (us-pmhnp bc.yaml).
  • Prescriptive authority: "An advanced practice registered nurse may issue prescription orders appropriate to the advanced practice registered nurse's areas of competence as established by the advanced practice registered nurse's education, training, or experience" (N 8.06(2)), unless the license carries a notation that the individual "may not issue prescription orders" (N 8.06(1)). A new applicant "applying to have prescriptive authority" provides "evidence of completion of 45 contact hours in clinical pharmacology or therapeutics within 5 years preceding the date of application for licensure" (N 8.03(1)(h)); an applicant under the alternate-education path of N 8.03(2) is "ineligible for prescriptive authority ... without satisfying N 8.03 (1) (d) and (h)". The 45 hours are a one-time application showing the Board verifies before licensure and are not modeled; the renewal obligation is the 16 hours above. Controlled substance prescription orders must be "submitted electronically as permitted by state and federal law, and shall contain the practitioner's drug enforcement agency number" (N 8.07(2)), so a controlled-substance prescriber also holds the DEA row (us-dea.yaml). Schedule I, most Schedule II amphetamines and anabolic steroids for nonmedical purposes may not be prescribed (N 8.06(3)).
  • Independent practice (Wis. Stat. § 441.09(3m); N 8.046): an APRN may practice "without being supervised by, or in a collaborative relationship with, a licensed physician or dentist" once the Board verifies 3,840 hours of professional nursing in a clinical setting over at least 24 months plus 3,840 clinical hours of advanced practice registered nursing in the recognized role while working with a physician or dentist "who was immediately available for consultation and accepted responsibility" over at least 24 months, on a Board form, with malpractice insurance (§ 441.09(5)) and the fee. It is a one-time eligibility showing recorded on the license, not a renewal requirement, and attaches no continuing education. An APRN who has not qualified continues to "document a collaborative relationship with a licensed physician or dentist" (N 8.10(7)).
  • Transition from the APNP certificate: "The board will grant an advanced practice registered nurse license to each individual who held a Wisconsin issued certificate as an advanced practice nurse prescriber before September 1, 2026, and grant one or more specialty designations corresponding to the recognized roles" (N 8.03, Note 1). "If you are a current APNP, your license number will not change" (DSPS APRN FAQ). An RN practicing in a recognized role on January 1, 2026 without an APNP certificate may be licensed under N 8.03(2) on 3,840 approved clinical hours instead of the graduate degree and pharmacology hours, without prescriptive authority. The APNP certificate's own September 30 even-year renewal (former Wis. Stat. 440.08(2)(a)) ended with the conversion; the 16-hour requirement itself is unchanged, so hours earned for the APNP certificate before September 1, 2026 count toward the February 2028 renewal when they fall inside the period beginning March 1, 2026.
  • Prescription drug monitoring: Wisconsin law "requires prescribers to review the PDMP before prescribing any controlled substance for greater than a three day supply" (DSPS Prescribing Controlled Substances page; Wis. Stat. § 961.385; CSB 4.105). The ePDMP account is a review duty, not a registration with a renewal date or continuing education, and Wisconsin requires no state controlled-substance registration of a practitioner: a person "registered under federal law" may dispense controlled substances in Wisconsin to the extent the federal registration authorizes (Wis. Stat. § 961.32(1m)(a)). There is no `csr` layer in this state.
  • Other conditions of renewal (N 8.045): the renewal fee "as determined by the department under s. 440.03(9)(a), Stats., the workforce survey fee, and any applicable late renewal fee"; the nursing workforce survey "to the satisfaction of the board"; and DSPS also lists "Current liability insurance" as a renewal document, reflecting the malpractice coverage of Wis. Stat. § 441.09(5) (N 8.03(1)(f)). None is continuing education. Wisconsin has no statewide implicit bias, human trafficking, suicide prevention or opioid mandate for nurses beyond the two controlled-substance hours above.
  • Compacts: Wisconsin has been a Nurse Licensure Compact member since 2000 and implemented the enhanced NLC on January 19, 2018 (DSPS Nursing Licensure Facts Sheet; NCSBN NLC map). The compact covers the RN license only; an APRN applicant may rely on "a multistate license as a registered nurse ... issued by a jurisdiction, other than Wisconsin, which has adopted the nurse licensure compact" (N 8.03(1)(c)3.) but the APRN license itself is single-state. Wisconsin has not enacted the APRN Compact, which is not in effect anywhere.
  • Pending rulemaking: the emergency rule "shall remain in effect for 2 years or until permanent rules take effect, whichever is sooner" (order § 31; 2025 Wisconsin Act 17, section 172(1)). The permanent-rule hearing on chs. N 1 to 8 was noticed for September 10, 2026, and DSPS expects adoption in 2027. N 8.05 still reads "advanced practice nurse prescriber"; recheck it when the permanent rule is published in case the Board restates the 16 hours or limits the two controlled-substance hours to licensees with prescriptive authority.
