Mississippi PMHNP requirements
Total
Mississippi sets no APRN hour total that applies to every board-certified PMHNP. The topic minimums below still apply. Your ANCC certification renewal sets its own hours, listed with your other credentials. The renewal cycle is biennial, and CE is due by December 31 of even years.
Topic minimums
- Controlled substances (Rule 1.2(B)(9))
- 5
- You need 5 hours each cycle.
Cycle and record rules
- Renewal
- The renewal cycle is biennial, and CE is due by December 31 of even years.
- Renewal fee
- The board renewal fee is $100 every 2 years, and a late (delinquent) renewal adds a $50 fee.
- New licensees
- Exempt at the first renewal of State Certification only, and only for an APRN who graduated from an accredited master's or higher APRN program within the last two years: "APRNs graduating from an accredited master's degree or higher APRN program within the last (2) years are exempt from this requirement for the first renewal of State Certification only" (30 Miss. Admin. Code Pt. 2840, R. 1.2(B)(9)(c)). National certification must still be maintained. An APRN whose first Mississippi renewal falls more than two years after graduation owes the five controlled-substance hours.
- Approved providers
- The Board keeps no approved-provider list. Hours must come from "an accredited healthcare educational institution or a nationally accredited provider of healthcare continuing education" (30 Miss. Admin. Code Pt. 2840, R. 1.1(F)); a contact hour is fifty minutes, one semester credit is fifteen contact hours and one quarter credit is ten (R. 1.1(E)). Hours count "per State Certification Period", the two calendar years ending December 31 of the even year (R. 1.1(S)). The RN license has no hours to accept; anything logged against it is held for the APRN, ANCC and DEA rows. APRNs "register for a basic user account with CE Broker to manage continuing education documents" and upload the five hours' certificates there (Board FAQ).
- Recordkeeping
- Keep CE documentation for 2 years after the end of each cycle.
- Board audit
- The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
- Late renewal
- A late renewal adds a $50 late fee.
To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.
Every credential a Mississippi PMHNP renews
Each one renews on its own date, and a lapse at any of them stops prescribing. The ANCC certification and DEA registration are the same in every state.

Full board policy details
- No continuing education on the RN license. "Title 30 Mississippi Administrative Code, Part 2815: Continuing Education was repealed by the Board in February 2020" (Board FAQ; the Secretary of State's code shows "Pt. 2815: Continuing Education Requirements. REPEALED. Effective 09/16/2021"). Miss. Code Ann. § 73-15-27(a) conditions RN renewal on the application and "the biennial renewal fee to be set at the discretion of the board, but not to exceed One Hundred Dollars ($100.00)" (a)(ii), and 30 Miss. Admin. Code Pt. 2810, Ch. 4 adds no hours. The one exception is competence after a gap in practice (next note). The forty-hour and ten-hour APRN figures that older vendor summaries repeat were the repealed Part 2815 ("a minimum of forty (40) contact hours ... at least ten (10) contact hours ... directly related to controlled substances"); they no longer apply to renewal.
- Continuing basic nursing competencies after five years out of practice: "Any registered nurse applying for a license, renewal of an active license, reinstatement of a lapsed license, or change from inactive to active status may be required to provide evidence of continuing basic nursing competencies when such nurse has not practiced nursing for compensation or performed the function of a registered nurse in a voluntary capacity with or without compensation within the five-year period immediately prior to such application" (Miss. Code Ann. § 73-15-27(a)(v)). Rule 2810-4.7 lists the evidence: a Board-approved reorientation program within the past five years, "Completion of twenty contact hours of continuing education directly related to nursing practice" within the two years before the application, or three semester hours of nursing credit in the same two years; the Board FAQ: "The RN shall complete a minimum of twenty (20) contact hours of accepted continuing education earned in the previous 2-year period immediately prior to such application." It is triggered by not practicing, which is not a license fact the app collects (a nurse can hold an active license and not practice), so it is not modeled; a returning nurse logs the twenty hours against the RN row and the Board reviews them at application.
- General APRN continuing education is satisfied by national certification: the APRN must "Engage in continuing education activities that are designed to improve the knowledge, skill, and ability levels of the APRN. Achievement, maintenance, and renewal of a national certification in a designated area of practice by a national certification organization recognized by the Board shall satisfy this requirement" (30 Miss. Admin. Code Pt. 2840, R. 1.2(B)(8)), and the same renewal requires the APRN to "Maintain documentation of current national certification ... In the case of a lapse in national certification, the APRN must notify the Mississippi Board of Nursing. The APRN must stop practicing immediately until such time as the national certification is renewed" (R. 1.2(B)(5)). Because certification is a condition of the State Certification, every Mississippi APRN satisfies (B)(8) by holding it, and the engine carries no total and no `pmhnp bc` gate; the certification's own 75 hours are us-pmhnp bc.yaml. The five controlled-substance hours of (B)(9) are a separate item and are not lifted by certification.
- Prescriptive authority and the DEA: "authorized APRNs may prescribe Schedules II, III, IV, or V. Application for this privilege requires an additional fee. Additionally, an application must be submitted to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)" (30 Miss. Admin. Code Pt. 2840, R. 1.5(A)). The Board calls the privilege Controlled Substance Prescriptive Authority (CSPA): "CSPA is not automatically granted with an APRN license in Mississippi", "Do Not apply for a DEA registration prior to being issued prescriptive authority by the MBON", and "DEA will be notified by the board of nursing once CSPA has been approved" (Board APRN page). At renewal the APRN must "Maintain documentation of DEA Registration (if applicable). In case of a lapse in DEA Registration, the APRN must notify the Board immediately. The APRN must stop prescribing controlled substances until such time as the DEA Registration is renewed and has notified the Board of DEA Registration renewal" (R. 1.2(B)(6)). The CSPA is the state registration of Miss. Code Ann. § 41-29-125(1)(a) and is modeled as the `csr` row (ms-csr.yaml); nothing on this rule is gated on it, because the five controlled-substance hours bind every APRN.
- Prescription monitoring program: "APRNs shall enroll in and utilize the Mississippi Prescription Monitoring Program (MPMP)" (30 Miss. Admin. Code Pt. 2840, R. 1.4(F)); the Board: "You must register for the PMP to simply have an APRN license in Mississippi", even without a DEA registration. Rule 1.5 sets the look-back (six months at an initial encounter, three months thereafter), the ten-day initial opioid supply for acute pain, point-of-service drug testing for chronic opioid or benzodiazepine therapy and the methadone bar. These are practice rules, not continuing education, and are not modeled.
- Reinstatement of a lapsed State Certification requires "a minimum of forty (40) contact hours of continuing education related to the advanced clinical practice of the APRN within the past two (2) years", of which "At least five (5) contact hours must be directly related to controlled substances. This requirement applies to all APRN reinstatement applicants, irrespective of controlled substance prescriptive authority" (30 Miss. Admin. Code Pt. 2840, R. 1.2(C)(7)-(7)(a)), plus current national certification, a criminal background check and PMP enrollment. The forty hours are a reinstatement condition rather than a renewal requirement and are prose only; a lapsed APRN should log forty in-window hours before applying.
- Monitored practice hours (30 Miss. Admin. Code Pt. 2840, R. 1.3): a new APRN completes 1,000 or 2,000 monitored practice hours with a qualifying provider before practicing at a site without them, with program clinical hours creditable when national certification follows within two years of graduation; an APRN with a year of practice in another jurisdiction may be deemed to have met it. One-time and tied to entry, not to renewal, so not modeled.
- Compacts: Mississippi is a party state to the Nurse Licensure Compact (Miss. Code Ann. § 73-15-22; 30 Miss. Admin. Code Pt. 2850), so a Mississippi-resident RN holds a multistate license renewed on this calendar, and an APRN may hold the State Certification on a multistate privilege from another compact state without a Mississippi RN row (Pt. 2840, R. 1.2(B)(1)); the Board: "If your primary state of residence is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC), you will need to provide proof of multi-state licensure in that Compact state in order to be granted APRN privilege in Mississippi." Mississippi has not enacted the APRN Compact, which is in effect nowhere, so the State Certification is single-state and "APRN licenses are NOT endorsed from another state" (Board APRN page).
- Medical cannabis certifications are a separate registration with the Department of Health: a practitioner who issues written certifications completes "a minimum of eight (8) hours of continuing education in medical cannabis" to register and "five (5) hours of continuing education in medical cannabis annually to maintain this registration" (30 Miss. Admin. Code Pt. 2840, Ch. 2, R. 1.5(A), effective October 15, 2022). It attaches to the MDOH registration, not to the nursing license, and is not modeled for this population.
