Here's what a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) must complete to renew in Missouri.

These are the Missouri APRN license requirements for a board-certified PMHNP who prescribes controlled substances. Your RN license, ANCC certification and DEA registration renew separately; see every credential.

Next deadline: April 30, 2027The renewal cycle is biennial, and the license renews by April 30 of odd years.

Cycle and record rules

Renewal
The renewal cycle is biennial, and the license renews by April 30 of odd years.
Renewal fee
The board renewal fee is $85 every 2 years.
Approved providers
The Missouri State Board of Nursing sets no continuing education for RN or APRN license renewal, so it keeps no approved-provider list and accepts no hours. The only education a Missouri PMHNP owes is the national certification's (ANCC's 75 contact hours, us-pmhnp_bc.yaml) and, with a DEA registration, the federal MATE Act training (us-dea.yaml). Hours logged against these rows are held for those credentials.
Recordkeeping
Keep CE documentation for 2 years after each renewal.
Late renewal
A late renewal adds a late fee.

To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.

Full board policy details
  • RN renewal has no hours. Renewal is "for one (1), two (2), or three (3) years as determined by the board"; "The required fee and information related to the nurse's practice and demographics for the purpose of collecting nursing workforce data shall be submitted prior to the expiration date of the license" (20 CSR 2200-4.020(8)(A)-(B)). Neither the renewal rule nor Chapter 335, RSMo (sections 335.036, 335.046 and 335.056 govern renewal and fees) names continuing education or continued competency as a condition of renewal; the only competency showing is for a license "inactive for three (3) years or more" or "lapsed for three (3) years or more", when the nurse "may be required to appear before the board personally and demonstrate evidence of current nursing knowledge and may be required to successfully complete the National Council of State Boards of Nursing's licensure examination" (4.020(9)(E), (10)(C)). That return-to-practice path is left in prose.
  • APRN renewal rides on national certification, not hours. "For certified APRNs, renewal periods shall be for one (1), two (2), or three (3) years as determined by the MSBN and run concurrent with the Missouri or other multistate RN license. In order to renew an APRN license, the APRN shall- 1. Maintain a current unencumbered RN license or current multistate privilege to practice in Missouri. An RN license placed on inactive or lapsed status will automatically lapse the APRN license; ... 4. Provide primary source evidence of recertification by a certifying body, approved by the MSBN, to the MSBN prior to the current expiration date ... 5. Adhere to all requirements of the BNDD and the federal DEA; and 6. Failure to satisfy any of the requirements of paragraphs (5)(A)1. and 4. of this rule shall result in the lapse of the APRN license in Missouri" (20 CSR 2200-4.100(5)(A)). "Each APRN is required to notify the MSBN within five (5) business days of any discipline or expiration of the APRN national certification" (4.100(2)(F)). National certification substitutes for nothing here because there are no state hours; it is the condition of the license, and its CE is ANCC's (us-pmhnp bc.yaml). "Your APRN license renewal fee is included with your RN license renewal" (Board, Requirements to Maintain an Active Missouri APRN License).
  • APRN expiration date: "Nursys will always show the expiration date of the APRN license as the earlier of these two dates", the Missouri RN (or other-state multistate RN) expiration and "the national certifying body expiration date" (Board, Requirements to Maintain an Active Missouri APRN License). The calendar here is the RN's April 30 of odd years; a PMHNP whose ANCC certification expires before the next April 30 should enter that date on the APRN row, and the renewal reminder then tracks the certification. An APRN whose anchor RN license is a multistate license from another compact state has no Missouri RN row, pays the APRN renewal fee and renews "between February 1 and April 30 of every odd-numbered year" on this same calendar.
  • Uncertified APRNs (legacy): an APRN "approved by the MSBN as noncertified prior to January 1, 2010" renews "every two (2) years" on "A minimum of eight hundred (800) hours of clinical practice in their advanced practice nursing population focus area and in the advanced practice role; and ... A minimum of sixty (60) contact hours in their advanced practice nursing population focus area of practice" from ANCC-, ACCME-, ACPE- or CDR-accredited sources or the listed professional bodies, with independent study allowed for 100 percent (20 CSR 2200-4.100(5)(B)). The population is closed (no new uncertified APRNs since 2010, and an uncertified APRN "is not eligible to reinstate" an inactive or lapsed license, 4.100(6)(E), (7)(E)); every PMHNP-BC is certified by definition, so the 60 hours are not modeled. A legacy uncertified APRN should be tracked by hand.
  • Controlled substance prescriptive authority is a one-time certificate, not a renewal. The Board "may grant a certificate of controlled substance prescriptive authority" to an APRN who "Provides evidence of a minimum of one thousand hours of practice in an advanced practice nursing category" (RSMo 335.019.2), with "Evidence of completion of an advanced pharmacology course" shown by the APRN program transcript, a school letter, "three (3) credit hours post-baccalaureate course in advanced pharmacology ... within the last five (5) years" or "forty-five (45) continuing education units in pharmacology within the last five (5) years"; "at least three hundred (300) clock hours of preceptorial experience in the prescription of drugs, medicines, and therapeutic devices with a qualified preceptor"; delegation "in a collaborative practice arrangement under section 334.104, RSMo, with a Missouri licensed physician who has an unrestricted federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number"; and the 1,000 post-graduation practice hours (20 CSR 2200-4.100(3)(A)-(D)). "There is no renewal or expiration date assigned to Controlled Substance Prescriptive Authority eligibility issued by the Board of Nursing. However, this privilege may be removed as a result of disciplinary action, lapse of the RN and/or APRN license or the removal of registration by BNDD or DEA" (Board, General Instructions for Controlled Substance Prescriptive Authority). The 45 pharmacology CEUs are an application alternative to a transcript, not a recurring obligation, so nothing is modeled; "Once the APRN has received controlled substance prescriptive authority from the MSBN, he/she may apply for a BNDD registration number and a federal DEA registration number" (4.100(4)), the `csr` (mo-csr.yaml) and `dea` (us-dea.yaml) rows.
  • Prescribing under a collaborative practice arrangement: an APRN "may be delegated the authority to prescribe controlled substances listed in Schedule II-hydrocodone and Schedules III, IV, and V of section 195.017, RSMo, in a written collaborative practice arrangement"; "Schedule II-hydrocodone and Schedule III narcotic controlled substance prescriptions shall be limited to a one hundred twenty-(120-) hour supply without refill"; buprenorphine for medication-assisted treatment "for up to a thirty- (30-) day supply without refill" (20 CSR 2200-4.200(2)(G)9.; RSMo 334.104.2). An initial opioid prescription for acute pain is capped at a seven-day supply (RSMo 195.080.2). The collaborating physician reviews at least 10 percent of the APRN's services and "a minimum of twenty percent (20%) of the cases in which the APRN wrote a prescription for a controlled substance" every 14 days (4.200(3)(E)); the arrangement is "reviewed at least annually" (4.200(3)(B)). These are practice conditions, not continuing education. Missouri attaches no opioid, pain management, controlled-substance or pharmacology CE to prescriptive authority or to the nursing license; the prescriber-facing education is the federal MATE Act training on the DEA row (us-dea.yaml).
  • No statewide mandates: Missouri has no implicit bias, human trafficking, suicide prevention, cultural competency, infection control or ethics CE for nurses, and the prescription drug monitoring program (RSMo 195.600 to 195.610, the Joint Oversight Task Force program created by S.B. 63, 2021) is a registration and query duty, not education.
  • Compacts: Missouri is a Nurse Licensure Compact state (enacted 2010, enhanced NLC implemented January 19, 2018, NCSBN NLC map), so a Missouri-resident RN holds a multistate RN license renewed on this April 30 calendar, and an APRN whose anchor RN license is another compact state's multistate license may hold a Missouri APRN license without a Missouri RN license (20 CSR 2200-4.100(2)(A)1.; fee at 4.010(1)(H)2.). Missouri has not enacted the APRN Compact (NCSBN lists Delaware, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming as enacted, none implemented, with Missouri not pending), so every Missouri APRN license is a single-state license.
