Iowa PMHNP Continuing Education Requirements
Here's what a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) must complete to renew in Iowa.
These are the Iowa APRN license requirements for a board-certified PMHNP who prescribes controlled substances. Your RN license, ANCC certification and DEA registration renew separately; see every credential.
The renewal cycle is triennial, and your license renews at the end of your birth month.

Iowa PMHNP requirements
Total
Iowa sets no APRN hour total that applies to every board-certified PMHNP. The topic minimums below still apply. Your ANCC certification renewal sets its own hours, listed with your other credentials. The renewal cycle is triennial, and your license renews at the end of your birth month.
Topic minimums
- CDC guideline for prescribing opioids for chronic pain (opioid prescribers)
- 2
- You need 2 hours each cycle.
Limits on how the hours are earned
- Carryover
- max 18 hrs
Up to 18 unused hours can carry into the next cycle.
Cycle and record rules
- Renewal
- The renewal cycle is triennial, and your license renews at the end of your birth month.
- Renewal fee
- The board renewal fee is $99 every 3 years, and a late (delinquent) renewal adds a $50 fee.
- Approved providers
- Iowa no longer approves providers or content: the June 4, 2025 rewrite "removed the Board's requirement to approve continuing education (CE) providers and CE content" (board CE page), and 481 IAC chapter 619 asks only that hours be "appropriate subject matter" under 619.2(3) and be documented with "proof of attendance, licensee's name, course date, course title, awarded hours and provider approval information" (619.2(4)). The board excludes self-help and self-care content that is not scientifically supported, CPR and basic life support, and orientation in-service activities (board CE page). Hours count only "within the renewal period" (619.2(1)); the board's renewal page adds that a late licensee "may take CE during the 30 days after expiration". Up to 18 excess hours carry into the next period (619.2(2)"b").
- Recordkeeping
- Keep CE documentation for 4 years after the end of each cycle.
- Board audit
- The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
- Late renewal
- The board allows a 30-day grace period after expiration. A late renewal adds a $50 late fee.
To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.
Every credential an Iowa PMHNP renews
Each one renews on its own date, and a lapse at any of them stops prescribing. The ANCC certification and DEA registration are the same in every state.

Full board policy details
- National certification in place of hours: "Current national certification or recertification related to the practice of nursing. The national certification or recertification is recognized as 36 contact hours of continuing education" (481 IAC 619.2(3)"h"). Because an ARNP "must maintain current certification with a national professional certification organization at all times while the ARNP license is active" (621.4(2)) and renews by submitting "A dated copy of the applicant's current advanced level certification" (621.3(1)"b", 621.3(5)), the 36-hour total is gated on not holding `pmhnp bc`. The board lists the American Nurses Credentialing Center among its "national professional certification organization[s]" (621.1), so PMHNP-BC qualifies. The opioid hours of 621.6(3) and the mandatory reporter training are separate conditions of renewal and are not lifted.
- Credited activities other than courses (481 IAC 619.2(3)): a board-approved nurse refresher course counts hour for hour ("i"); "a preceptor for a nursing student or employee transitioning into a new clinical practice area, for a minimum of 60 hours as a part of an organized preceptorship program" is "recognized as 6 contact hours" ("j"); "Completion of a nurse residency program ... is recognized as 36 contact hours" ("k"); academic offerings from community colleges, colleges and universities and governmental academies count at 15 contact hours per semester hour or 10 per quarter hour with "a transcript exhibiting a passing grade" ("g", "l", 619.2(2)"a"). Logged as ordinary credits with the hours the rule assigns.
- No pharmacology or other ARNP-specific hours: 481 IAC chapter 621 attaches no pharmacotherapeutics, controlled-substance or population-focus hours to the ARNP license beyond the opioid prescriber's two hours of 621.6(3); the board's ARNP CE page lists none. Prescriptive authority is part of the ARNP license itself ("An ARNP licensed by the board may prescribe, administer, or dispense prescription drugs or devices, including controlled substances, within the ARNP's role and population foci", 621.4(3)) and has no separate renewal. The fluoroscopy supervision course of 621.4(5) is a one-time prerequisite for ARNPs who supervise fluoroscopy, outside this population, and is not modeled.
- First renewal: initial licenses run "for a 24- to 36-month period" (481 IAC 617.8(2)); the board's renewal page describes the first period as "two years plus the number of months to their birth month". Chapter 619 contains no first-renewal waiver or proration, so the full 36 hours (or national certification) are owed at the first renewal and no first-cycle override is modeled.
- Exemptions (481 IAC 619.2(5)): a licensee "may be exempt from continuing education requirements if the licensee provides proof upon request of" honorable active military duty during the license period; a current active license in another state with mandatory CE "so long as the license is active and the licensee resides in a state other than Iowa at the time of renewal or reactivation"; work outside the United States as a nurse for the government, foreign service or missionary work; or a physical or mental disability or illness, on an application signed by a health care provider and "submitted prior to license expiration". "A licensee shall not claim an extension of time or exemption ... unless and until the licensee has received approval." Board-granted exemptions are recorded outside the engine.
- Reactivation (481 IAC 617.8(7)): an inactive licensee "shall have obtained 36 contact hours of continuing education, as specified in 481--Chapter 619, within the 36 months prior to reactivation", pays the $175 RN reactivation fee (617.2(6)) and, if no active license was held in any jurisdiction within five years, completes a nurse refresher course within 12 months (617.8(7)"a"(3)); the ARNP license is reactivated separately for $81 after the RN (621.3(6)"b", 617.2(7)). The catch-up equals the standard requirement, so no conditional block is needed. "The licensee is not required to obtain continuing education credit or pay fees while the license is inactive" (617.8(5)"c").
- Nurse Licensure Compact: Iowa is a party state (Iowa Code chapter 152E; 481 IAC 617.1, 617.3(2)"a"). A multistate RN license is renewed through the home state, and at renewal the licensee must "Attest that Iowa is the primary state of residence or that the primary state of residence is a noncompact state" (617.8(3)"a"). An ARNP whose RN is a multistate license from another party state renews the Iowa ARNP license on that RN (621.3(1)"c"); the board's renewal page: if the primary-state multistate RN license is active, no Iowa RN license is needed. The APRN Compact of Iowa Code 152E.3 is enacted but not yet in effect.
