Total

New Mexico sets no APRN hour total that applies to every board-certified PMHNP. The topic minimums below still apply. Your ANCC certification renewal sets its own hours, listed with your other credentials. The renewal cycle is biennial, and your license renews at the end of your birth month.

Cycle and record rules

Renewal
The renewal cycle is biennial, and your license renews at the end of your birth month.
Renewal fee
The board renewal fee is $110 every 2 years.
New licensees
The first renewal is different. New licensees have adjusted first-cycle requirements, such as prorated hours or first-cycle-only rules, and we apply them automatically.
Approved providers
"To be acceptable in New Mexico, the CE activity must have been approved by a recognized approval body and must enhance the licensee's scope of professional development as related to their activities in nursing" (16.12.2.10(C) NMAC): national or state recognized nursing organizations (ANCC-accredited providers and approvers), other state boards of nursing, and New Mexico board-approved local monitoring systems; also academic credit (one academic credit equals 15 contact hours), CEUs or contact hours from university CE divisions, and "educational offerings approved through other generally recognized health care or professional organizations as related to licensee's nursing practice" (16.12.2.10(C)(2)). "Correspondence courses and home-study programs are acceptable, if approved." Hours count only when "accrued within the 24 months immediately preceding expiration of license" (16.12.2.9(Q)(3)).
Recordkeeping
Keep CE documentation for 1 year after each renewal.
Board audit
The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
Late renewal
A late renewal adds a late fee.

To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.

Full board policy details
  • National certification in place of the 30 hours: "Certification or recertification granted by a national professional organization which uses criteria designed to recognize competence in a specialized area of nursing practice may be used as approved CE. Verification of certification or recertification within the current renewal period is accepted in lieu of the 30 hours of CE required for licensure" (16.12.2.10(E) NMAC). The board's CE page lists "Current National Certification (from Board of your specialty such as ANCC, NBCRNA) to cover all CE's EXCEPT non-cancer pain management" for the APRN and "Current National Certification (from Board of your specialty such as CCRN, CPN, CNOR)" for the RN. The 30-hour total is therefore gated on not holding `pmhnp bc`; the five non-cancer pain hours are not. The board asks APRNs to hold "both an APRN and RN account in CE Broker" and to upload the certificate to both.
  • National certification is a condition of the CNP license, not only a CE substitute: "NPs must maintain national certification. A copy of the specialty certification/recertification card shall be presented at the time of each subsequent renewal. Nurse practitioners licensed by the NM board, after December 2, 1985 are required to be nationally certified in their specialty" (16.12.2.12(J)(1) NMAC; NMSA 1978 § 61-3-23.2(E)). The ANCC renewal itself is us-pmhnp bc.yaml. The board's CE page describes a hours-only path for an "APRN without a national certification" (30 RN hours, 10 hours of pharmacology, 5 hours related to CNP practice, and 5 hours of non-cancer pain management with a DEA or 5 more CNP-practice hours without one), which can only describe a CNP licensed before December 2, 1985; it appears in no rule text and is not modeled. A PMHNP whose ANCC certification lapses cannot renew the CNP license on hours.
  • Prescriptive authority has no renewal CE of its own. The CNP obtains it once by verifying "400 hours of work experience in which prescribing dangerous drugs has occurred within the two years immediately preceding the date of the application" or a 400-hour preceptorship (16.12.2.12(L)(5)(a)(i) NMAC), and for controlled substances by providing "verification of current state-controlled substances registration and current DEA number" (16.12.2.12(L)(5)(a)(ii)). The hint that a CNP owes 50 contact hours per biennium including 15 in pharmacology describes the pre-2018 edition of the CNP rule; the current text carries no pharmacology hours. The CNP must "maintain a formulary of dangerous drugs and controlled substances that may be prescribed with each renewal", which the board may audit (16.12.2.12(L)(5)(b)).
  • Prescription monitoring program: "Any advanced practice nurse who holds a federal drug enforcement administration registration and a New Mexico controlled substance registration shall register with the board of pharmacy to become a regular participant in PMP inquiry and reporting" (16.12.9.9(A) NMAC), with a report review before a first controlled substance prescription of more than four days and at least every three months during continuous use (16.12.9.9(C)-(D)). A registration and lookup duty, not continuing education; not modeled. The Board of Pharmacy verifies the PMP account at each controlled-substance registration renewal (nm-csr.yaml).
  • Reactivation and lapse: "If the license is not renewed by the end of the renewal month, licensee does not hold a valid license and shall not practice nursing in New Mexico until the lapsed licensed has been reactivated" (16.12.2.9(Q)(2)(d) NMAC). "Applicants for relicensure and reactivation must meet CE requirements as stated in these rules" (16.12.2.9(Q)); a license "lapsed for four or more years" requires a refresher course with didactic and clinical components, and a CNP reactivating after four or more years "must also complete a refresher course or certification reactivation" (16.12.2.9(Q)(7), 16.12.2.12(K)). The catch-up equals the standard requirement, so no reactivation block is written. Nurses mobilized for military action are excused from renewal and CE while on active duty (16.12.2.9(Q)(2)(f), (Q)(3)(d)).
  • No other topic mandates: 16.12.2 NMAC and 16.12.9 NMAC attach no implicit bias, suicide prevention, human trafficking, or controlled- substance hours beyond the five non-cancer pain hours; the federal MATE Act training belongs to the DEA row (us-dea.yaml). New Mexico is a Nurse Licensure Compact state ("Upon initial licensure, or upon renewal, a licensee may apply for a multistate license for an additional fee not to exceed fifty dollars ($50.00)", NMSA 1978 § 61-3-24(B)); a multistate RN license renews on this same cycle. The APRN Compact has not taken effect.
