Idaho PMHNP Continuing Education Requirements
Here's what a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) must complete to renew in Idaho.
These are the Idaho APRN license requirements for a board-certified PMHNP who prescribes controlled substances. Your RN license, ANCC certification and DEA registration renew separately; see every credential.
The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.

Cycle and record rules
- Renewal
- The renewal cycle is biennial and is tied to your license's renewal (expiration) date.
- Renewal fee
- The board renewal fee is $90 every 2 years, and a late (delinquent) renewal adds a $35 fee.
- Approved providers
- The Idaho Board of Nursing sets no continuing education for RN or APRN license renewal, so it keeps no approved-provider list and accepts no hours: the former 15-contact-hour continuing competency rule was deleted when IDAPA 24.34.01 was rewritten effective March 28, 2023. The only education an Idaho PMHNP owes is the national certification's (ANCC's 75 contact hours, us-pmhnp_bc.yaml) and, with a DEA registration, the federal MATE Act training (us-dea.yaml). Hours logged against these rows are held for those credentials.
- Recordkeeping
- Keep CE documentation for 2 years after each renewal.
- Board audit
- The board may audit licensees to verify CE compliance.
- Late renewal
- A late renewal adds a $35 late fee.
To keep your proof in order, see what to keep for a CE audit, which covers every state’s retention period and what the audit notice asks for.
Every credential an Idaho PMHNP renews
Each one renews on its own date, and a lapse at any of them stops prescribing. The ANCC certification and DEA registration are the same in every state.

Idaho PMHNP required trainings and mandates
Idaho also requires specific trainings. Some are due once around initial licensure, and others run on their own recurring schedule.
Recurring mandates outside the 2-year cycle
- Attest at APRN renewal to participation in a peer review process acceptable to the Board, and keep the evidence (signed peer statement, records review, peer contract or institutional policy) for production on request (Idaho Code 54-1411(2); IDAPA 24.34.01.100.11.c; HP-BON Advanced Practice Registered Nurses 1). A renewal condition, not continuing education; no hours are owed. APRN row only.
Full board policy details
- RN renewal has no hours. The renewal rule asks only that "The original completed renewal application and renewal fee as prescribed in Section 400 of these rules, are submitted to the Board and dated not later than August 31 of the appropriate renewal year. All licenses are renewed as prescribed in Section 54-1411, Idaho Code" (IDAPA 24.34.01.100.02.c), and the statute adds only "No license shall be valid unless renewed each and every two (2) years on the renewal dates fixed by the board" and a fee cap (Idaho Code 54-1411(1)). Until March 28, 2023, former Rule 061 (IDAPA 23.01.01.061, later 24.34.01.061) required two learning activities per two-year period, one of which could be 15 contact hours of continuing education; the Board's Zero-Based Regulation prospective analysis for "RULE .061 CONTINUING EDUCATION (LPN'S/RN'S)" records that "The proposed rule eliminates the current rule in place for continuing education requirements for RN's and LPN's" and, after a 100-practice-hour or 15-contact-hour alternative was discussed on August 11, 2022, "a proposal was made to eliminate CE requirements from rule entirely". The adopted chapter has no continuing education section. CE vendors and licensing guides that still print "15 contact hours" for Idaho describe the repealed rule.
- APRN renewal rides on national certification and peer review, not hours. "The advanced practice registered nurse license may be renewed every two (2) years as specified in Section 54-1411, Idaho Code, provided that the advanced practice registered nurse: a. Current Registered Nurse License. Maintains a current registered nurse license or privilege to practice in Idaho. b. Evidence of Certification. Submits evidence of current APRN certification by a national organization recognized by the Board. c. Peer Review Process. Provides evidence, satisfactory to the Board, of participation in a peer review process acceptable to the Board" (IDAPA 24.34.01.100.11). The statute: "Certified nurse-midwives, clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists and certified nurse practitioners desiring license renewal must provide proof, satisfactory to the board, of the applicant's competence to practice by documenting completion of a peer review process" (Idaho Code 54-1411(2)). National certification substitutes for nothing because there are no state hours; it is a condition of the license, and its CE is ANCC's (us-pmhnp bc.yaml). A nurse practitioner approved before July 1, 1998 without national certification is exempt from the certification evidence (100.11.d, 100.12.b); every PMHNP-BC is certified by definition.
- Peer review is an attestation, modeled as an external mandate on the APRN row. Peer review is "The systematic process by which a qualified peer assesses, monitors, and makes judgments about the quality of care provided to patients measured against established practice standards ... performed by a licensed APRN, physician, physician assistant, or other professional certified by a recognized credentialing organization" (IDAPA 24.34.01.002.21). The Board's policy (HP-BON Advanced Practice Registered Nurses 1, revised October 12, 2023) says it "shall ... Include one or more of the following peer review processes: a. Clinical rounds b. On-site peer collaboration c. Retroactive records review d. Exemplar demonstrating the APRN's role in practice and spheres of impact with subsequent peer-review e. Other appropriate processes as defined by the APRN-AC and approved by the Board", and completion "will be evidenced by: 1. Signature of the attestation statement at the time of biennial licensure renewal. 2. APRN supporting documentation at the request of the Board, e.g., signed peer statement, reports or records, peer contract, institutional policy, etc. 3. Demonstration or documentation available at on-site practice audit." No hours or category attach, so the mandate cannot be cleared by a logged credit; it is a reminder to keep the peer statement on file.
- APRN practice hours. The Board's re-entry policy (HP-BON Advanced Practice Registered Nurses 2, revised October 12, 2023) treats an APRN "who has practiced less than 200 hours during the renewal period or who has not practiced within the most recent 3 years" as not meeting "active practice" requirements; such an APRN completes supervised re-entry practice (200 hours if absent three to five years, 300 hours beyond five, an individual plan beyond ten) "prior to issuance of a renewable license", on a temporary license (IDAPA 24.34.01.100.03.k: "An advanced practice registered nurse who has not practiced the minimum required period of time during the renewal period may be issued a temporary license in order to acquire the required number of hours"). Practice hours are not continuing education and are not modeled.
- Prescribers owe no state hours. "All advanced practice registered nurses may prescribe and dispense pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic agents pursuant to applicable state and federal laws" (IDAPA 24.34.01.200.05.b), and "Pharmacologic agents include legend and Schedule II through V controlled substances" (24.34.01.002.25, "Prescriptive and Dispensing Authorization"); prescriptive authority is part of the APRN license, with no separate certificate, no pharmacology hours and no opioid or controlled-substance CE in the nursing rules or the Nurse Practice Act (Idaho Code Title 54, Chapter 14). The state duties attached to controlled-substance prescribing are the Board of Pharmacy registration (id-csr.yaml) and the PDMP check: "Prior to issuing a patient a prescription for outpatient use for an opioid analgesic or benzodiazepine listed in schedule II, III, or IV, the prescriber or the prescriber's delegate shall review the patient's prescription drug history from the preceding twelve (12) months from the prescription drug monitoring program" (Idaho Code 37-2722(f), effective October 1, 2020, as quoted in the Board of Pharmacy's PDMP Mandatory Checking FAQ). Neither is CE. The federal MATE Act training is on us-dea.yaml, so nothing here is gated on `prescribing`, `prescribes opioids`, `dea` or `csr`.
- No statewide topic mandates. Idaho has no implicit bias, human trafficking, suicide prevention, ethics, infection control or opioid CE for nurses: with Rule 061 gone, IDAPA 24.34.01 names no CE subject at all, and none was found in Title 54, Chapter 14 of the Idaho Code.
- Renewal dates in transition. The rule's fee table still prints "License Renewal Expiration Date: Aug 31-odd years" for both the RN and the APRN license (IDAPA 24.34.01.400.01), so the licenses renewed in August 2025 run to August 31, 2027. Idaho Code 67-2614(2) now requires natural persons to "renew on or before the birthday of the licensee", and "The first renewal ... shall not be required until at least twelve (12) months after the licensee's ... birthday following the initial licensure"; 67-2614(4) lets "A renewal period ... be extended or shortened by as much as one (1) year to maintain established renewal cycles or to change an established renewal cycle". DOPL's notice of March 10, 2026: "Beginning April 1, 2026; The Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL) begins transitioning to 2-year licenses that expire on the licensee's birthday. Those currently licensed will be distributed based on date of birth and birth year- even or odd. There will no longer be an option for single year renewal. Every licensee will get at least 2 years", and "All new applicants will be issued at least a 2-year license that expires on their date of birth". Temporary, one-time short-term, virtual telehealth and apprentice credentials are not moved. Enter the expiration printed on each license; the engine steps back 24 months from it either way. A licensee whose transition term is shorter or longer than two years should correct the issue or expiration date on the row.
- Compacts. Idaho is a Nurse Licensure Compact state (the Board's licensure policy notes that "Issuance of a multi-state license vs. a single-state license is dependent on provisions of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)"), so an Idaho-resident RN may hold a multistate license renewed on this cycle, and an APRN may anchor the Idaho APRN license on "a current registered nurse license or privilege to practice in Idaho" (IDAPA 24.34.01.100.11.a) from another compact state, in which case there is no Idaho RN row. Idaho was among the first states to enact the APRN Compact, but the compact is not yet operational anywhere, so every Idaho APRN license is single-state. "A licensee may hold only one (1) active renewable license to practice nursing at any time except that licensed advanced practice registered nurses must also be licensed to practice as licensed registered nurses" (100.02.e).
