Idaho LPC & LCPC Continuing Education Requirements
Idaho counselors must complete 12 continuing education hours every 2 years to renew their LPC / LCPC license, including 6 hours of ethics, 3 hours of professional boundaries, and 3 hours of suicide assessment or intervention.
The renewal cycle is biennial, and your license renews at the end of your birth month.
07. Continuing Education. In each twenty-four (24) month period preceding the renewal1 of a license, all licensees must complete six (6) hours in ethics2, three (3) hours of boundaries3, and three (3) hours in suicide assessment or intervention4. Additionally, licensees are required to comply with the continuing education and competence sections of the Codes of Ethics pertaining to their licensure.

- IDAPA 24.15.01 requires the 12 topic-specific hours but does not prescribe a live/in-person minimum, an asynchronous cap, a provider preapproval list, or a list of credit-bearing activity types. Delivery and activity eligibility therefore remain subject to Board review rather than unsupported structured restrictions.
- The current rule does not impose a general attendee repeat-course ban. It also does not state that teaching, presenting, or publication credit is categorically available or unavailable.
- DOPL began transitioning this Board to biennial birth-date renewals on October 14, 2025. Odd-birth-year licensees moved first; even-birth-year licensees transitioned with their 2026 renewal. The engine uses the resulting steady-state 24-month birth-date cycle and does not model the temporary one-year alignment terms.
- License status rules, inactive/reactivation: Licensees on inactive status are exempt from CE during the inactive period and may not practice. To reactivate, the licensee must document 12 hours of CE (6 ethics, 3 boundaries, 3 suicide) completed within the 24 months preceding reactivation. Senior/retired status licensees are exempt from CE but may not practice. Idaho does not offer a formal CE waiver or hardship extension; licensees short on CE must either go inactive or let the license lapse and reinstate. No exam-substitution pathway exists in lieu of CE clock hours.
- License status rules, lapsed/reinstatement: A licensee whose license has lapsed must complete the full 12-hour CE requirement (6 ethics, 3 boundaries, 3 suicide) before the license can be reinstated. Reinstatement also requires payment of the standard renewal fee plus any applicable late fee, and confirmation to the Board that the required CE has been completed. Practicing on a lapsed license is not permitted.
