Full board policy details
- Nebraska does not pre-approve or review CE offerings; any CE relevant to mental health practice is acceptable. All 32 hours may be earned via online, home study, distance learning, or live formats — no minimum live/in-person requirement.
- Activity conversions: 60 minutes = 1 CE hour for workshops, lectures, and interactive webinars. Academic coursework: 15 hours per semester credit, 10 per quarter credit, 14 per trimester credit (audited courses count for roughly half). Authoring a peer-reviewed publication = 16 hours per publication. Home-study credit is awarded per the provider's designation.
- Course repeat restriction: An individual may receive credit for the initial presentation of a CE program or course during a renewal period. Credit will NOT be given for subsequent presentations of the same program or course within the same cycle.
- License status: Inactive licensees are not required to complete CE during the inactive period. To reactivate from inactive status or reinstate an expired license, the licensee must complete 32 hours of CE (including required ethics, and 6 hours of major mental disorders if LIMHP) in the 24 months immediately preceding reactivation.
- Waivers: The Department may waive CE requirements in whole or in part for circumstances beyond the licensee's control, including active military service and other documented hardships. A waiver applies to a single renewal period only — if the hardship continues into the next cycle, the licensee must file a new waiver request for that period. First-credentialed licensees within the 24-month period prior to renewal are automatically waived.
- Multi-credential licensees: A licensee holding a mental health practice license with one or more associated certificates (e.g. LMHP with both CPC and LMFT certificates) is not required to earn separate CE hours for each additional certificate — one 32-hour cycle covers all credentials under this board.
- Provisional credentials (PLMHP, provisional MFT certificate) are not subject to CE requirements.
- Nebraska does not offer conditional or provisional renewal for licensees who fall short of CE. A license cannot be renewed active unless CE is complete or waived by the expiration date; the only remedies are a hardship waiver or letting the license lapse and reinstating after completing the hours.
