Overview of the examination pathway. Education, experience and fees are detailed in the board application requirements. The board determines your eligibility.
Check your graduate education
The usual route starts with an MSW from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program. A bachelor’s degree alone does not qualify. Section 491.005(1)–(2) also specifies qualifying doctoral, Canadian and foreign-equivalent social work education routes.
Your education must emphasize direct clinical services. It must include a supervised clinical field placement and 24 semester hours or 32 quarter hours of clinically oriented human-behavior and practice-methods coursework, including psychopathology. No more than one research course counts toward that clinical coursework total.
Request a university practicum letter verifying direct clinical services to clients. Advanced-standing students may need a university letter identifying undergraduate courses accepted in place of graduate requirements. Keep syllabi where course titles do not make the clinical content clear. Use the board’s education worksheet and document checklist before applying.
A general social work program name is not enough to establish eligibility. Compare the actual transcript and placement with the statutory requirements. For foreign education, obtain the equivalency documentation and course evaluation required by the board before assuming the degree will transfer.
Register before earning Florida experience
Apply as a Registered Clinical Social Worker Intern before beginning the Florida post-master’s experience used for licensure. Intern registration permits supervised practice; it is not an independent license. Section 491.0045 requires continuing supervision while you practice as an intern.
Arrange for your university to send an official transcript directly to the board. Obtain a signed supervisor letter identifying you and the supervisor’s license number and agreeing to supervision. Confirm that your registration has been issued and your supervisor approved before counting hours. See the intern application and supervisor instructions.
The board allows intern registration with 15 semester hours or 22 quarter hours of the required clinical coursework. Finish the remaining courses before exam approval and full licensure. This is an intern-stage allowance, not a reduction in the full-license education requirement.
Intern registration generally lasts five years and cannot simply be renewed. Check the board’s expiring-intern options well before your expiration date; extensions and subsequent registrations have eligibility conditions. See the intern registration statute.
Complete and document supervised practice
The board requires two years of post-master’s experience, including 1,500 hours of face-to-face psychotherapy, at least 100 supervision hours over no fewer than 100 weeks, and at least one supervision hour every two weeks. Use the board’s Verification of Clinical Experience form for each supervisor. Review the experience requirements and form.
Your supervisor must be qualified for clinical social work; a professional license alone does not establish qualified-supervisor status. Verify approval before making a supervision agreement. Our Florida supervisor guide explains the training side.
Reaching the hour total early does not remove the minimum time requirement. Keep dated clinical and supervision records, and arrange the board paperwork whenever you change supervisors. Continue supervision until full licensure. For private-practice settings, section 491.005 also requires a licensed mental health professional on the premises when an intern provides clinical services.
Pass the ASWB Clinical exam
Florida requires the ASWB Clinical examination. Request board approval before registering with ASWB. The board’s exam instructions require completion of the graduate coursework and at least 18 months of documented post-master’s clinical experience before exam approval; graduate practicum time does not count toward those 18 months.
Exam eligibility arrives before the full two-year experience requirement can be finished. Passing the test at that stage does not make you independently licensed. Arrange for your official results to reach the board and continue the remaining supervised experience.
Register through ASWB after approval and confirm the current exam fee, scheduling and accommodation procedures there. The testing fee is separate from Florida’s application fees.
Separate initial courses from renewal CE
The initial-license checklist calls for an 8-hour Florida laws and rules course and a 3-hour HIV/AIDS course, using approved providers. If the HIV/AIDS course is not complete, the board’s notarized good-cause affidavit provides for completion within six months of licensure. Submit the course proof or the required affidavit with your application.
A board-approved 2-hour domestic violence course is due within six months after licensure. Put that deadline on your calendar as soon as the license is issued.
The 8-hour initial laws and rules course serves a different purpose from the recurring 3-hour renewal course. Likewise, the initial domestic violence deadline is separate from its later renewal schedule. Keep the completion certificates with your licensing records.
Submit a complete application and budget the fees
Use the board’s examination-pathway application. Gather official education records, any required practicum or advanced-standing letters, supervisor verification, official exam results and required course documentation. If you have held another professional license, follow the board’s verification instructions. Include any explanations and supporting records requested by the application’s history questions.
Electronic fingerprinting is required. Follow the Department of Health’s screening instructions and use the correct profession’s ORI so the board receives your results.
| Application stage | Fee |
|---|---|
| Intern registration | $150, nonrefundable |
| Full-license application | $100, nonrefundable |
| Initial license + unlicensed activity fee | $75 + $5 |
| Full-license board total | $180 |
Sources: intern fees and initial-license fees. The two application stages total $330 in board fees for this route. Budget separately for the exam, fingerprinting, courses, transcripts and any paid supervision. These amounts are not renewal fees.
Track missing documents through your MQA account. A file number identifies an application, not permission to practice independently. Wait for the issued license before changing your practice status.
Already licensed in another state?
Check the board’s MOBILE endorsement pathway before starting an intern application. Under section 456.0145, eligibility includes an active, unencumbered license with a comparable scope and at least two years of practice within the preceding four years, alongside examination or certification, disciplinary-history, screening and other conditions. Meeting those two headline criteria alone is not enough.
Use the board’s MOBILE checklist and application to establish the correct route. An out-of-state license does not automatically become a Florida license. The board also describes provisional and limited licenses for particular circumstances; these have separate conditions and are not substitutes for unrestricted licensure.
Plan for your first renewal once licensed
The board’s renewal guidance exempts initially licensed practitioners from CE at their first biennial renewal. You still need to renew the license and meet applicable fee and screening requirements. The initial domestic violence deadline remains separate. Confirm how your licensing pathway affects the exemption with the board.
Use the expiration date on your license. Our Florida LCSW renewal guide covers the ongoing CE cycle and fees. Once licensed, certification.app helps track renewal dates, CE hours and certificates.
