Prediabetes: An Opportunity to Prevent Diabetes

NetCE

Prediabetes is a condition that affects more than one-third of the adult population in the United States. As a major risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular disease, its potential toll on the healthcare system and on the individual is significant. Also known as "glucose intolerance," prediabetes is diagnosed when the blood glucose is higher than normal but does not meet the diagnostic criteria for diabetes. Results from the Diabetes Prevention Program showed that the onset of diabetes could be delayed or prevented with lifestyle interventions in subjects with glucose intolerance who were also overweight and sedentary. This course will describe the pathophysiology and risks associated with prediabetes and diabetes. It will also discuss the lifestyle interventions recommended by the Diabetes Prevention Program.
