Utilizing CBT and ACT Interventions to Address ADHD and Perfectionism in Adults

ASSESSMENT AND THERAPY ASSOCIATES OF GRAND FORKS

Live, interactive via Zoom. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a "neurodevelopmental disorder defined by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning in or development" (APA, 2022). Perfectionism is defined as, "the tendency to demand of others or oneself an extremely high or even flawless level of performance, in excess of what is required by the situation" (APA, n.d.). People diagnosed with ADHD often endorse maladaptive cognitive distortions (Serine et al., 2020), with perfectionism being the most frequently endorsed pattern of cognitive distortion (Strohmeier et al., 2016). ADHD and perfectionism may affect those with ADHD combined presentation and women more frequently than other ADHD presentations and men, respectively (Muller & Piko, 2026). ADHD is positively corrlated with higher rates of self-criticism and reduced self-compassion (Beaton et al., 2020), thus leading to potentially maladaptive behavioral patterns, including maladaptive perfectionism (Muller & Piko, 2026). ADHD and perfectionism can uniquely impact one's psychological well-being, self-esteem, and identity (Farmer et al., 2026). Additionally ADHD and perfectionism are associated with higher rates of ego depletion and daily exhaustion, increasing risk for burnout (Muller & Piko, 2026). Research recommends treating ADHD and perfectionism by reframing cognitive distortions (Serine et al., 2020), increasing self-compassion (Beaton et al., 2020), and cultivating acceptance of ADHD diagnosis and imperfect behaviors (Farmer et al., 2026). This presentation will provide a summary of the literature regarding ADHD and perfectionism and will describe how to utilize CBT and ACT interventions to address ADHD and perfectionism.

From Withdraw to Reach: Navigating Shame in the EFT Process

ASSESSMENT AND THERAPY ASSOCIATES OF GRAND FORKS

Live, interactive webinar (via Zoom). Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy with strong evidence indicating that it significantly improves relationship satisfaction and reduces conflict for couples (Beasley & Ager, 2019). At the same time, there are numerous nuances to learn when practicing effective EFT with couples. In this webinar, we will explore how each partner's moves in the cycle have typically been developed to guard against the exposure of shame. Accordingly, we need to develop methods to notice and close-validate shame that occurs in Stage 1 during couples therapy. Once the safety of de-escalation has been achieved, we need to access primary emotions as a way to explore negative view of self, with an expectation that shame often lies at the core of this negative view of self. The presenter will stress that the apex of EFT, the Step 7 "reach", mostly involves the sharing of shame and will discuss ways this can be navigated within couples therapy. Participants will leave this webinar with a better understanding of how to navigate shame within EFT couples therapy. This is an intermediate-level webinar that is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals and students in mental health graduate training program.

What EFT Stage Are We Even In?!

One of the questions clinicians frequently ask EFT Supervisors is, "Is this couple in Stage 1 or Stage 2 of EFT?". Understanding what differentiates Stage 1 from Stage 2 work and how to progress couples through the stages is essential for effective EFT. In this webinar, we will explore how Stage 1 is focused on the cycle in order to obtain de-escalation, whereas Stage 2 is focused on the self and marked by free-flowing exploration. Relatedly, the presenter will discuss how to identify a variety of de-escalation markers, which signal the end of Stage 1. The presenter will also discuss the primacy of self-exploration, which marks the entrance into Stage 2. Participants will leave this webinar with a better understanding of Stages 1 and 2 in EFT couples therapy. This is an intermediate-level webinar that is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals and students in mental health graduate training programs.

Internal World and Behavioral Moves of Withdrawers

ASSESSMENT AND THERAPY ASSOCIATES OF GRAND FORKS

Live, interactive webinar (via Zoom). Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy with strong evidence indicating that it significantly improves relationship satisfaction and reduces conflict for couples (Beasley & Ager, 2019). At the same time, there are numerous nuances to learn when practicing effective EFT with couples. In this webinar, we will explore what EFT trainer Kathryn Rheem meant by the statement, "withdrawers seem to have the steeper road to walk in EFT." With the exception of their primary relationship, the withdrawer's world frequently looks pretty good: They achieve a lot, tend to be successful, and frequently have a positive view of self. At the same time, interpersonal closeness is often uncomfortable for withdrawers. The presenter will explore the behavioral moves of withdrawers in the cycle with a focus on how the therapist needs to present themselves during the session to create a space where the withdrawer can experience success sharing their thoughts and feelings. Participants will leave this webinar with a better understanding of withdrawers in couples therapy. This is an intermediate-level webinar that is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals and students in mental health graduate training programs.

Internal World and Behavioral Moves of Pursuers

ASSESSMENT AND THERAPY ASSOCIATES OF GRAND FORKS

Live, interactive webinar (via Zoom). Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy with strong evidence indicating that it significantly improves relationship satisfaction and reduces conflict for couples (Beasley & Ager, 2019). At the same time, there are numerous nuances to learn when practicing effective EFT with couples. In this webinar, we will explore the value of the pursuer's anger. The presenter will also share ways to lean into the anger with acceptance and understanding, rather than pulling away in frustration and fear. We will learn how to reframe anger a pursuer experiences in more hopeful ways (e.g., "Increased energy" that is fighting for their relationship, representing their hope). The presenter will discuss how reflection that the therapist understands their central dilemma (i.e., pushing for change does not work, and doing nothing is not an option) is central to successful work with pursuers in couples therapy. We will also explore how most pursuers have a very harsh inner critic and how to help them navigate this. Participants will leave this webinar with a better understanding of pursuers in couples therapy. This is an intermediate-level webinar that is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals and students in mental health graduate training programs.
